HTC Vive's Focus Vision is a 999 stab at high-end VR and mixed reality

Engadget

HTC Vive is following up its intriguing, yet expensive, XR Elite headset with something that's still quite pricey, the 999 Focus Vision. Built on the same platform as the standalone Vive Focus 3, the upgraded model adds a slew of new features like built-in eye tracking, 16MP stereo color front-facing cameras for mixed reality and automatic IPD adjustment (which makes it easier to share). And with the additional 149 DisplayPort wired streaming kit, gamers can also hook the Focus Vision up to their PCs for more intensive VR experiences. But that's to be expected. While Meta has poured tens of billions into making its Quest headsets cheaper and more accessible, without any need to worry about profitability, HTC Vive has leaned towards making more expensive headsets better suited for business and government work.

Dataset for predicting cybersickness from a virtual navigation task

Wang, Yuyang, Li, Ruichen, Chardonnet, Jean-Rémy, Hui, Pan

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This work presents a dataset collected to predict cybersickness in virtual reality environments. The data was collected from navigation tasks in a virtual environment designed to induce cybersickness. The dataset consists of many data points collected from diverse participants, including physiological responses (EDA and Heart Rate) and self-reported cybersickness symptoms. The paper will provide a detailed description of the dataset, including the arranged navigation task, the data collection procedures, and the data format. The dataset will serve as a valuable resource for researchers to develop and evaluate predictive models for cybersickness and will facilitate more research in cybersickness mitigation.

A Conversation With ChatGPT About The Metaverse - Blockzeit

#artificialintelligence

ChatGPT is a prototype artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI which specializes in dialogue. The chatbot is a large language model fine-tuned with both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. It is based on OpenAI's GPT-3.5 model, an improved version of GPT-3. ChatGPT was launched on November 30, 2022 and has garnered attention for its detailed responses and articulate answers. I wanted to see what chatGPT has to say about the metaverse.

Artifical Intelligence Has Revolutionized Our Life Over The Past Decades:

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence refers to the ability of any machine or computer to mimic human capabilities such as recognizing objects, making decisions, and solving problems, etc. The past decade has witnessed the great rise of Artificial Intelligence. The technology has made an impact in almost every field out there. The two major reasons for the rapid growth of AI in this decade are: data and compute. IBM Watson, a natural language question-answering computer, competes on Jeopardy and defeats two former champions.. Watson is a significant leap of a machine's ability to understand the context in human language.

Magic Leap wants to create art, not just technology

Engadget

Everyone has an opinion about Magic Leap. It's either a revolutionary augmented reality company that could change the face of entertainment, or it's emblematic of everything wrong with the technology industry -- an over-hyped, multi-billion dollar pipe dream. Last week, we saw the first impressions of the company's long-awaited headset, which splashed a bit of reality on the company's hype cycle. Now that we have a better sense of what Magic Leap's $2,295 hardware is capable of, we can take a step back and consider what the company is actually trying to accomplish. In a brief demonstration, I found the Magic Leap One headset much lighter than I expected, even though it looks like a pair of '80s sci-fi goggles.

Why Amazon is Betting on Virtual and Augmented Reality

#artificialintelligence

In a recent PCMag article, Rob Marvin got hands-on with the Amazon Sumerian 3D development platform for building AR/VR apps and gives an in-depth overview of its features and the company's broader Immersive Technology strategy. According to Marvin, Amazon's decision to enter the AR/VR space with their Sumerian platform came down to a convergence of three factors: the emergence of smartphone-based augmented reality; untapped VR opportunities in the business-to-business (B2B) market; and helping AWS customers solve pain points with things they were already trying to do: "The B2B applications include scenarios like interactive digital signage (think the giant talking hologram ads from Blade Runner: 2049), virtual training, and a host of industrial Internet of Things use cases, such as using sensors to create digital twins and complex simulations. The idea is that you have a high-quality, high-definition, context-aware sensor in the hands of billons of people." One of Sumerian's biggest selling points, Marvin explains, is that despite how powerful the editor is, there's nothing to download or install. During the demo, Sumerian loaded from a browser URL in seconds. Even doing real-time natural language processing (NLP) and rendering elaborate animations didn't slow it down much.

HTC Vive Pro's dual cameras can apparently track hand motion

Engadget

When HTC unveiled its higher-end Vive Pro VR system back at CES, the company was suspiciously quiet about the dual cameras on this VR headset: there were no related demos, and the company reps remained tight-lipped. The smart-ass in me assumed that based on the similar looks, this module was probably a variant of the inside-out tracking sensor on the standalone Vive Focus, while others speculated that it would bring AR capability. Well, today we finally have an answer: it's actually a depth sensor, and it'll apparently enable basic hand tracking without additional hardware. This new bit of information came straight from the horse's mouth. By that I mean HTC Vive's Vice President Raymond Pao, who I bumped into at the company's Shenzhen event earlier this week -- it was celebrating the commencement of the Vive Focus' shipment, as well as introducing the Vive Pro to the Chinese media and partners.

Presenting the Best of CES 2018 winners!

Engadget

Finally, after long hours of debating on which of our finalists should win our Best of CES awards this year, we've made our decisions. Below is our list of winners for each category, as well as Best of the Best and People's Choice. Accessibility has become a major theme at CES, and it's one of the harder categories to judge because of all the potentially life changing tech on the floor. But Xenoma's e-skin pajamas took the prize this year thanks to its innovative fabric sensors that can stand up to the abuse of a washing machine and don't need any sort of liquid or gel to keep conductivity with your skin. Black Box VR is building the gym of the future.
