I have a confession to make. I feel like a fraud. Every few days, I receive an email from either a friend, a friend of a friend, or a random company that asks me for my insights in Artificial Intelligence. These include entrepreneurs who have just sold their startups, Stanford MBA graduates who reject half a million dollar offers, venture capitalists, even major bank executives. A couple of years earlier, I wouldn't even have the courage to approach those people, let alone dreaming about them wanting to talk to me.

AlphaZero, the game-playing AI created by Google sibling DeepMind, has beaten the world's best chess-playing computer program, having taught itself how to play in under four hours. The repurposed AI, which has repeatedly beaten the world's best Go players as AlphaGo, has been generalised so that it can now learn other games. It took just four hours to learn the rules to chess before beating the world champion chess program, Stockfish 8, in a 100-game match up. Artificial Intelligence has various definitions, but in general it means a program that uses data to build a model of some aspect of the world. This model is then used to make informed decisions and predictions about future events.

Trading and machine learning were made for each other. Both activities are rooted in analyzing noisy data for patterns and using those patterns for making predictions. The relationship is so much so that you can even take graduate-level college courses focused entirely on the problem of applying machine learning to trading. Surely many an engineer has felt the allure of this "dark side." Generally, in AI stock trading machine learning is used to build models based on financial data, of which there is no shortage of: moving averages of stock highs and lows, moving averages of trade volume, overall market trends, market volatility, etc. This stuff is all right there and easy enough to translate into features useful for training machine learning models, but stock prices themselves react to more than just historical financial data.
