Apple on Tuesday began showing off a new round of smart home products, including an iPad-like device dubbed the HomeView, meant to hang on walls or perch on tabletops and act as a hub for other smart home devices. The HomeView device starts at $299 and will begin shipping next month. It will feature a 7in screen and face recognition, will help users control doorbells, thermostats and smart locks in a market where Apple has tinkered for a decade without major success.

Apple HomeView hands-on: Siri AI is your new roommate

Engadget

Apple's big smart home push has finally arrived, and the cornerstone of that initiative is the HomeView display. The device is a combination smart screen and speaker, providing personalized info from your iPhone or iPad for a better in-home experience. Of course, the device works with various smart home gadgets, including cameras, a door lock and a thermostat from LG (and also a thermostat from Schneider Electric). After the official announcement this morning, I got to spend some time with the HomeView, swiping through menus and watching someone chat with Siri AI. While the HomeView may look like an enlarged Apple Watch, the smart display is very much an in-home hub.

We've heard rumors for years that Apple was working on an iPad-style display from which you'd be able to manage smart home devices. It was described as the company's answer to Amazon's Echo Show or Google's Nest Hub. Reports suggested it would be called the HomePad, but thankfully Apple steered clear of causing any confusion with the HomePod. Instead, the device is called the HomeView. This gizmo has a tilting, seven-square-inch Liquid Retina touch display -- perhaps paving the way for the touchscreen MacBook that's said to be coming very soon -- that's attached to a base with a speaker. You can place one on a table or countertop and mount the other to a wall.

Apple unveils HomeView, the company's smart display built for Siri AI

It seems like an eternity since the first reports that Apple was working on a smart display to rival Amazon's Echo Show came out, and at long last the company has finally revealed its take on the smart home screen. HomeView is a touchscreen device that acts as a hub for various connected devices, as well as a personalized control center for audio and more. The device was built for Siri AI and can adapt its content and features based on which of your family members are using it by pulling data from their iPhone or iPad. The centerpiece of the HomeView is a 7-inch square Liquid Retina display. To me, it looks like an enlarged Apple Watch, and the tabletop version with a base comes in Silver, Starlight, Rose Pink and Space Gray colors.
