Ayad Akhtar's brilliant new play, McNeal, currently at the Lincoln Center Theater, is transfixing in part because it tracks without flinching the disintegration of a celebrated writer, and in part because Akhtar goes to a place that few writers have visited so effectively--the very near future, in which large language models threaten to undo our self-satisfied understanding of creativity, plagiarism, and originality. And also because Robert Downey Jr., performing onstage for the first time in more than 40 years, perfectly embodies the genius and brokenness of the title character. I've been in conversation for quite some time with Akhtar, whose play Disgraced won the Pulitzer Prize in 2013, about artificial generative intelligence and its impact on cognition and creation. He's one of the few writers I know whose position on AI can't be reduced to the (understandable) plea For God's sake, stop threatening my existence! In McNeal, he not only suggests that LLMs might be nondestructive utilities for human writers, but also deployed LLMs as he wrote (he's used many of them, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini included). To my chagrin and astonishment, they seem to have helped him make an even better play. As you will see in our conversation, he doesn't believe that this should be controversial. In early September, Akhtar, Downey, Bartlett Sher--the Tony Award winner who directed McNeal--and I met at Downey's home in New York for what turned out to be an amusing, occasionally frenetic, and sometimes even borderline profound discussion of the play, its origins, the flummoxing issues it raises, and, yes, Avengers: Age of Ultron. We were joined intermittently by Susan Downey, Robert's wife (and producing partner), and the person who believed that Akhtar's play would tempt her husband to return to the stage. The conversation that follows is a condensed and edited version of our sprawling discussion, but I think it captures something about art and AI, and it certainly captures the exceptional qualities of three people, writer, director, and actor, who are operating at the pinnacle of their trade, without fear--perhaps without enough fear--of what is inescapably coming.

During the long embarrassing tow, my guest, who was a physicist, speculated that a "shear pin" in the motor failed, exactly as it was designed to do, to keep the aging and overheated putt-putt from cooking itself to death--a deliberately weak link that breaks the circuit before real damage happens. What if such a circuit breaker in my brain had stopped me from suggesting Let's go sailing! on a day clearly meant for an air-conditioned movie theater. Wouldn't it be great if automatic brakes in our heads shut us down before we shot off our mouths? Such purposeful failure is routinely engineered into just about everything--by engineers, or by evolution.

Ex-justice minister sought help with deleting data, net PR agent claims
A man engaged in internet-related reputation management has said that former Justice Minister Katsuyuki Kawai requested the deletion of personal computer data shortly after an alleged vote-buying scandal involving him and his wife, Anri, came to light last year. According to a statement of confession made by the man, read out by prosecutors during a hearing Monday as part of the trial of Anri Kawai at Tokyo District Court, Katsuyuki Kawai, 57, a lawmaker in the House of Representatives, met with the man at the former minister's residence in a dormitory for Diet members in Tokyo on Nov. 3 last year. At the time, Katsuyuki Kawai told the man that staff at his office may have taken some data without authorization, and that he wanted to delete any data that could cause a problem if it was leaked, the man said in the statement. On that day, Katsuyuki Kawai allegedly deleted PC data at his residence using data deletion software purchased by the man, according to the statement. The man also said he visited Kawai's office in Tokyo and the couple's offices in Hiroshima Prefecture the following day to delete PC data there.
FTC raids 14 firms over bid-rigging for school PCs in Hiroshima
The Fair Trade Commission has conducted on-site inspections of 14 companies on suspicion of repeated big-rigging for contracts to supply personal computers to public schools in Hiroshima Prefecture, it was learned Wednesday. The firms raided by the commission for their alleged violations of the anti-monopoly law included Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West Corp., Otsuka Corp., Fujitsu Leasing Co., Solcom Co., Hi-Elecom Co., Hokushin-Eiden and Shinsei Kogyosha Corp., according to sources with knowledge of the matter. The antitrust watchdog plans to search the firms' offices in the prefecture. NTT West, a unit of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., is based in Osaka, while Otsuka and Fujitsu Leasing are based in Tokyo. Solcom, Hi-Elecom, Hokushin-Eiden and Shinsei Kogyosha have their head offices in the city of Hiroshima, the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture.

The language barrier is preventing many foreign residents in Hiroshima Prefecture from keeping abreast of the latest status of the coronavirus pandemic, highlighting the need for municipalities to provide essential information in multiple languages. "It was through social media that I came to know about the whole kyūgyō yōsei thing," Michelle Crothers, an Australian who runs an English conversation school in the city of Hiroshima, said, referring to the Japanese phrase for "request to suspend businesses." On April 18, when the prefecture issued the request in line with the state of emergency declared by the central government, Crothers stumbled upon a friend's social media post written in English about the prefecture's announcement. She then fumbled her way through official websites by the government and the prefecture in hopes of finding out whether her school will have to shut down in line with the request, but ended up giving up. As an extra precaution, she decided to close it for the time being.

HIROSHIMA – With technology powered by artificial intelligence, high school students are colorizing black and white photos of Hiroshima taken before the atomic bombing of the city in 1945. The 14 students at Hiroshima Jogakuin high school launched the initiative last November, aiming to make the images more vibrant and to revive the memories of survivors so they can better pass on their experiences to the next generation. "We are the last generation who can talk to atomic bomb survivors. We want to treasure conversations generated through the photos and contribute to keeping records of their accounts," said Anju Niwata, 16. The students began the work after learning about AI-based free colorization technology from their collaborator, Hidenori Watanabe, a professor of information design at the graduate school of the University of Tokyo.

In this paper, the Andorid EGC which the agent works in Android smartphone can evaluate the feelings in the conversation. The tourist navigation system with the proposed technique in this paper will be expected to be an emotional oriented interface in Android smartphone.
