China's nuclear fusion reactor runs at 126MILLION F for 17 minutes

China's'artificial sun' nuclear fusion reactor in Hefei has set a new world record after running at 126 million F (70 million C) for 1,056 seconds โ€“ more than 17 minutes. This record, set on December 30, marks the longest running duration for an experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) fusion energy reactor, Xinhua News Agency reports. EAST already set a previous record in May by running for 101 seconds at a higher temperature โ€“ 216 million F (120 million C). Nuclear fusion power works by colliding heavy hydrogen atoms to form helium, releasing vast amounts of energy, mimicking the process that occurs naturally in the centre of stars like our sun. Last year, MIT computer scientists and Adobe engineers came together to try to solve a major problem that many companies face: bit-rot. A good example is Adobe's successful Photoshop photo editor, which just celebrated its 25th birthday. Over the years Photoshop had accumulated heaps of code that had been optimized for what is now old hardware. "For high-performance code used for image-processing, you have to optimize the heck out of the software," says Saman Amarasinghe, a professor at MIT and researcher at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). "The downside is that the code becomes much less effective and much more difficult to understand."


SpaceX Returns To Flight With Successful Falcon 9 Launch, Drone Ship Landing

SpaceX ended a four-and-a-half month hiatus in its operations by successfully launching a Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Saturday. The launch, which is the first since Sept.1, delivered 10 satellites to low-Earth orbit for the communications company Iridium. The 10 satellites are the first of at least 70 that SpaceX will launch for Iridium's global satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT, over the next 14 months. In addition to clinching the launch, SpaceX also successfully landed the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket, setting it down on a drone ship named "Just Read the Instructions" off the coast of California. Landing and reusing recovered boosters is a key part of the company's ambitious space program, as it would drastically reduce the cost of launches and space travel.
