Pancreatic Cancer: New AI Tool May Help Detect

#artificialintelligence

Pancreatic cancer has been in the news a lot in recent years. A number of well-known figures have died from this deadly cancer, including Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, singer Aretha Franklin, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The 5-year survival rate for people with pancreatic cancer in the United States is 11%, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. If caught early, pancreatic cancer is treatable. Experts say that early detection is the best way to improve the chances of survival as the prognosis worsens significantly once the tumor grows beyond 2 centimeters.

Amy Schumer raises awareness about adult autism spectrum disorder through her husband's recent diagnosis

FOX News

Amy Schumer believes that attractive women struggle to maintain normal lives. Jennifer Eckhart and Tom Cotter explain why they disagree. Comedian Amy Schumer revealed last week on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that her 42-year-old husband, chef Chris Fischer, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as an adult, which is helping raise awareness that the condition can also be diagnosed as we get older. ASD " โ€ฆ is a complex, lifelong developmental condition that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person's social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation," according to the Autism Society. "It is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is often referred to as a'spectrum condition' that affects people differently and to varying degrees."

Don't Put Your Health in the Hands of Artificial Intelligence Just Yet

Meanwhile, the FDA has fast-tracked approval of AI-driven products, from approving just 1 in 2014 to 23 in 2018. Many of these products haven't been subjected to clinical trials since they utilize the FDA's 510(k) approval path, which allows companies to market products without clinical trials as long as they are "at least as safe and effective, that is, substantially equivalent, to a legally marketed device." This process has made many in the AI health industry happy. This includes Elad Walach the co-founder and chief executive officer of Aidoc, a startup focused on eliminating bottlenecks in medical image diagnosis. "The FDA 510(k) process has been very effective," Walach told Healthline.

Artificial intelligence improves colonoscopies

BACKGROUND: Polyps are made up of abnormal tissue; they are growths that most often look like flat, small bumps or tiny mushroom-like stalks. They are most commonly found in the colon and are typically less than half an inch wide. Most are non-cancerous, but because they are a result of abnormal cell growth, they can eventually become malignant (cancerous). Your doctor can help determine if a growth is a polyp by performing a biopsy, which involves taking a sample of the tissue and testing for the presence of cancerous cells. Treatment depends on their size, location, and whether they are malignant or benign. Hyperplastic polyps are harmless, while adenomatous polyps are the most common and although most will not; they do have the potential to develop into colon cancer. Finally, malignant polyps are noted under microscopic exam to have cancer cells in them. In most cases polyps do not cause symptoms, but if you do experience symptoms they may include things like; blood in your stool, rectal bleeding, pain, diarrhea, or constipation, nausea or vomiting. Blood on your toilet tissue or blood-streaked stools may indicate rectal bleeding and should be evaluated by a doctor.

In the future, however, those with RA may see AI and chatbots far more deeply involved in their healthcare journey. Amiee L., a Pennsylvania resident whose mother has RA and who is a new mother herself, told Healthline that she's game for the use of chatbots for health-related things. "I'm currently using a chatbot for breastfeeding," she said. "It's helpful at 2 a.m. when no one is awake and it also has great info." Lisa H., someone with RA also from Pennsylvania, said, "I use chatbots and love them."

How cancer changed this former Google exec's views on AI and medicine

Kai-Fu Lee became a legend in artificial intelligence research and the tech world because of his groundbreaking work the past three decades with Apple, Microsoft, and Google. But Lee says cancer has radically changed the way he views technology, his life, and the world of medicine. In September 2013, the former head of Google China was given a diagnosis of stage IV follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The cancer diagnosis put his career and life on the line. Then, it put his career and life in a new light.

Artificial Intelligence Could Help in Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Artificial intelligence may be just as good at detecting the spread of breast cancer as a specialist. The scientists were examining whether artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of computer algorithms could perform as well as a pathologist when detecting the spread of breast cancer to the lymph nodes in women with the disease. The researchers said they were stunned by what they found. "AI is increasingly being recognized as a major element of the healthcare landscape. We are now at a turning point where AI algorithms perform as well as or better than clinicians at specific tasks. But still, I did not expect such remarkable results at this early stage. We showed that state-of-the-art AI algorithms perform as well as or better than pathologists in detecting the spread of breast cancer to lymph nodes," Babak Ehteshami Bejnordi, an author of the study, told Healthline.
