Among Alexa's lesser-known abilities: You can ask the digital assistant about COVID-19 symptoms
If you're one of the 60 million or so Americans who own a smart speaker – yes, that's about 1 in 4 adults – you already know the basics of these trendy hands-free gadgets. Enable the speaker with its "wake word" – such as saying "Alexa" for an Amazon Echo device ($29-up) – and then ask a question to receive an immediate answer in a friendly, human-sounding voice. The device can do things as simple as acting as a timer to delivering directions, traffic, recipes, music and podcasts, so it's easy to appreciate the value of an always-on virtual assistant. And hey, it's also cool to simply ask one to turn on the lights or turn down the temperature, and it just, well, works – if you have connected compatible devices, that is. Apple Notes:5 incredibly useful things you didn't know it could do You might be home a lot more and leaning on these smart speakers during the coronavirus pandemic, so here we examine a few lesser-known things you can do with your Alexa-enabled speaker.

Interview with Nithya Thadani, CEO of RAIN
My background is in innovation and consulting. RAIN didn't start as a voice AI company -- at the time I joined RAIN, the company was doing many things in technology – voice AI being one of them – but it was not the sole focus. We pivoted to voice three years ago when I joined as CEO. There were so many early indications that voice technology would become ubiquitous. RAIN recognized early on that voice was bigger than those smart speakers we have in our homes.
Headspace: How the meditation app turns your stressful phone into a source of calm
Meditation and mindfulness have been around for thousands of years. But the advent of smartphones and computers led to a new phenomenon: the mindfulness app. There are a few to choose from, including the punchy, assertive 10% Happier, the elegant and placid Calm and the first app that really brought mindfulness to our phones, Headspace. Andy Puddicombe, a former Buddhist monk who went on to run a meditation clinic in London, met a new business partner, Richard Pierson, and launched Headspace in 2010. The company began as an events organisation and led to the now-ubiquitous app in 2012.

Kaia Health raises $10 million to treat chronic pain with AI
Chronic diseases affect the lives of millions of people around the world. Over 16 million adults in the U.S., for instance, have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an inflammation of the lungs that obstructs airflow. And researchers estimate that 80 percent of people in the U.S. will experience back pain several times in their lives. Making matters worse, the treatments tend to be expensive -- in 2010, the total annual cost of COPD and back pain in the U.S. was projected to be $50 billion and $240 billion, respectively. Kaia Health, a four-year-old firm founded by former Foodora CEO Konstantin Mehl and Manuel Thurner, claims its digital therapeutics solution -- apps that tap artificial intelligence (AI) and motion-tracking technology to help manage pain -- is not only cheaper than prescription drugs and in-person consultations, but more sustainable in the long term.

Flipagram, Stance socks, Honor and Headspace are among the week's L.A. tech highlights
With venture capitalists more guarded about where to put their cash amid a global economic slowdown, many technology start-ups are having to shed costs and generate profits sooner than expected. "If you want to become profitable at all costs, you're leaving users and growth on the table," said Farhad Mohit, chief executive of the image-sharing app. His Los Angeles company raised 70 million from investors about a year ago, a big haul that's still fueling the business today. The app enables people to create a slideshow from photos and videos, place samples of popular music in the background, add effects and share it with friends. Flipagram can get a small cut of sales if users buy a full song.
