DNA nanobots can exponentially self-replicate
Nanoscale "robots" made of DNA that rapidly self-replicate could be harnessed to manufacture drugs or other chemicals inside the body, say researchers. Feng Zhou at New York University and his colleagues created the tiny machines, which are just 100 nanometres across, using four strands of DNA. The nanorobots are held in a solution with these DNA-strand raw materials, which they arrange into copies of themselves one at a time by using their own structure as a scaffold. The team didn't respond to a request for comment, but say in their paper that their nanobots are capable of exponential reproduction. Andrew Surman at King's College London, who wasn't involved in the research, says that the nanobots are a step forward in creating machines from DNA that could manufacture drugs or chemicals, or even act as rudimentary robots or computers.

Nest's new thermostat has a Soli gesture sensor built in
Nest today introduced a new, more affordable thermostat to its lineup of smart home devices. Simply called the Nest Thermostat, it starts at $129 -- significantly cheaper than the $250 current-gen Nest Thermostat -- and leverages Google's Soli technology to recognize gestures behind its mirror-like display. The new Nest Thermostat comes at a time when many consumers are looking to use less energy in their homes, both because they want to save money and because they wish to take steps that help the environment. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, in April, spending plunged more than 13% -- the steepest drop since the government began to keep records nearly 60 years ago. And in a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, 63% of Americans said stricter environmental regulations are worth the cost that they would make sacrifices to comply with them.
Is ReRAM Ready to Leave the R&D Phase?
TORONTO – Resistive RAM is the epitome of an "emerging" memory in that, for the most part, it's still in the research and development phase. "I'd say the most progress is being in R&D," said Jim Handy, principal analyst with Objective Analysis, and co-author of the report Emerging Memories Ramp Up. There are many small companies working to commercialize it, such as Crossbar and Weebit Nano, and there's also a lot of research work being done at LETI, a technology research institute of CEA Tech based in France. The DRAM manufacturers are also dabbling in it, he said, but no one is rushing to bring out a part, although every foundry that offers MRAM also has some sort of ReRAM capability. Essentially, the major memory makers are hedging their bets.

AI Fuels Next-Gen HBM Demand EE Times
High bandwidth memory gained some momentum last week as Samsung Electronics announced it started mass production of its second-generation technology, dubbed Aquabolt. Designed for use with next-gen supercomputers, artificial intelligence (AI) and graphics systems, Tien Shiah, product marketing manager for High Bandwidth Memory at Samsung, said the 8 GB High Bandwidth Memory-2 (HBM2) offers the highest DRAM performance levels and the fastest data transmission rates available today with a 2.4 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) data transfer speed per pin at 1.2V. That's nearly a 50 percent performance improvement per package, he said, compared with Samsung's previous generation HBM2 package, Flarebolt, with its 1.6Gbps pin speed at 1.2V and 2.0Gbps at 1.35V. In a telephone interview with EE Times from CES, Shiah said a single Aquabolt package will offer a 307GBps data bandwidth, achieving 9.6 times faster data transmission than an 8Gb GDDR5 chip, which provides a 32GBps data bandwidth. This means using four packages in a system will enable a 1.2 terabytes-per-second (TBps) bandwidth, he said, hence the overall system performance by as much as 50 percent.
