The open-source AI boom is built on Big Tech's handouts. How long will it last?

MIT Technology Review

Companies like Google--which revealed at its annual product showcase this week that it is throwing generative AI at everything it has, from Gmail to Photos to Maps--were too busy looking over their shoulders to see the real competition coming, writes Sernau: "While we've been squabbling, a third faction has been quietly eating our lunch." Greater access to these models has helped drive innovation--it can also help catch their flaws. AI won't thrive if just a few mega-rich companies get to gatekeep this technology or decide how it is used. But this open-source boom is precarious. Most open-source releases still stand on the shoulders of giant models put out by big firms with deep pockets.

I asked an AI chatbot about AI replacing humans

Al Jazeera

This Labour Day, working people around the world have little to celebrate. Amid climate change, war and pandemics, inequality is rising, wages are stagnating or even falling, and inflation is skyrocketing, leaving billions of people struggling to make ends meet. In France, where in 1889 labour unions and socialists first designated May 1 as International Workers' Day, hundreds of thousands are demonstrating against a pension law raising the retirement age to 64. However, the sad fact is that many of these workers out on French streets and throughout the world today may not have a job at all come retirement. The speed with which automation and artificial intelligence (AI) are replacing humans in the workplace is breathtaking and poses an unprecedented risk of major economic disruptions and social upheavals.

Israel, US point to Iran after drone strikes Israeli-controlled tanker off Oman's coast

FOX News

Netanyahu spoke to Fox News Digital following the release of his new memoir, "Bibi: My Story." Officials in Israel say Iran is responsible for a drone strike that hit an Israel-associated, Liberian-flagged oil tanker off the coast of Oman on Tuesday. The tanker, the Pacific Zircon, sustained minor damage to its hull with no injuries or spillage of the gas oil cargo, Israeli-controlled Eastern Pacific Shipping said Wednesday, and an Israeli official said Iran was responsible. Three maritime sources told Reuters that a drone was suspected to have attacked the tanker. An Israeli official said Iran was responsible for the attack by using a Shahed-136 drone, the type it has been supplying to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine.

Gigs with Guarantees: Achieving Fair Wage for Food Delivery Workers

Nair, Ashish, Yadav, Rahul, Gupta, Anjali, Chakraborty, Abhijnan, Ranu, Sayan, Bagchi, Amitabha

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

With the increasing popularity of food delivery platforms, it has become pertinent to look into the working conditions of the 'gig' workers in these platforms, especially providing them fair wages, reasonable working hours, and transparency on work availability. However, any solution to these problems must not degrade customer experience and be cost-effective to ensure that platforms are willing to adopt them. We propose WORK4FOOD, which provides income guarantees to delivery agents, while minimizing platform costs and ensuring customer satisfaction. WORK4FOOD ensures that the income guarantees are met in such a way that it does not lead to increased working hours or degrade environmental impact. To incorporate these objectives, WORK4FOOD balances supply and demand by controlling the number of agents in the system and providing dynamic payment guarantees to agents based on factors such as agent location, ratings, etc. We evaluate WORK4FOOD on a real-world dataset from a leading food delivery platform and establish its advantages over the state of the art in terms of the multi-dimensional objectives at hand.

Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence as Pillars of Personalized Learning Models

#artificialintelligence

Modern educational systems have not really evolved enough to meet the needs of modern students.21 No wonder, the percentage of dropouts from university studies is quite high (40% in the U.S. and 10% in Europe7,9). The university student profile has changed over the years. While yesterday's students were mainly full-time, today's students face challenges such as work commitments, family obligations, financial constraints, physical impairments, and learning models that do not adequately engage students or help them understand core concepts.11 One might think that this issue concerns only those who fail to complete their studies, but this is view is shortsighted. Today's educational system deficiencies will affect the welfare of tomorrow's society. To improve current learning models, academic institutions around the world agree that the time has come to improve the world of education, moving from a traditional approach--where learning is standardized and available only to those with access to educational buildings--to a new paradigm that enables students to personalize their educational pathway, so they can progress at their own pace.19,21

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

At annual game convention E3, columnist Marc Saltzman picks out the action game he thinks you'll want to buy in the next year. Such is the dilemma at E3 – short for the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- the world's biggest video gaming convention held each June in Los Angeles, which drew more than 60,000 attendees. There's a lot to see and play on the showroom floor, behind closed doors, and at parties -- and only three days in which to do it. These are the upcoming action games that stood out during this year's show. Note: Be sure to read the recommended age rating when these games become available.

10 products from CES 2018 I would buy today

Now available in new colors and with Dell Mobile Connect, which lets you wirelessly tether a smartphone, the Dell XPS 13 is the smallest and most powerful 13-inch laptop in the world. LAS VEGAS--What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas -- at least hopefully not for a bunch of the products showcased here last week. Some of the technology that debuts at CES, the annual consumer electronics show, turns out to be "vaporware," that is, it will never make a commercial debut for one reason or another. But the following ten products should have a chance vying for space in your home or driveway. Beginning this summer, Lenovo's VR headset doesn't require a connection to a device, like a smartphone, laptop, or game console.

6 coolest gadgets from CES you'll likely see in your house this year

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Jennifer Jolly's coolest gadgets from CES you'll actually see in your home this year. A New Year means one thing in the world of gadgets -- a trip to Las Vegas for CES. It's the enormous consumer electronics show packed with nearly 50-football fields worth of shiny new tech toys. Somewhere inside the cavernous convention center crowded with TV's we can't afford, concept cars we'll never drive, and stupid "smart" things we'll never use (Alexa-enabled toilet…really?), there's always a handful of gadgets that really can hit the jackpot of product-perfection. That's what I set out to find early-on here in Las Vegas. Here are my favorites so far.
