The next breakthrough will likely come from multimodal AI modelswhich are armed with multiple senses, such as the ability to use computer vision and audio to interpret things, Eck told me. The next big thing will be to figure out how to build language models into other AI models as they sense the world. This could, for example, help robots understand their surroundings through visual and language cues and voice commands. Generative AI is going to get better and better, LeCun said: "We're going to have better ways of specifying what we want out of them." Currently, the models react to prompts, but "right now, it's very difficult to control what the text generation system is going to do," he added.

"AI is going to change our world in the years to come. But because it is such a powerful technology, we have to be aware of the inherent risks that will come with those benefits, especially those that can lead to bias, harm, or widening social inequity," she said.
Final lecture in AI Seminar Series explores how machines might learn as humans do
The third annual Modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) seminar series at NYU Tandon, bringing together students and experts to discuss recent advances in the field, wrapped up on December 6 with a presentation by Raia Hadsell, Head of Robotics Research at DeepMind. In the final presentation of the series, sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and organized by Professor Anna Choromanska, Hadsell explored ways in which human learning can inform machine learning systems to develop highly sophisticated AI to solve complex real-world tasks. The Fall roster kicked off in early October with a lecture by Facebook AI Research's Leon Bottou. The researcher, who harbors the long-term ambition of replicating human-level intelligence, examined causal inference, or finding the relationship between existing facts and objects. Next, on November 14, Francis Bach, researcher at Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA) in France, spoke about a new generation of "distributed optimization" schemes that are critically needed to scale algorithms to massive data.

Google to release DeepMind's StreetLearn for teaching machine-learning agents to navigate cities
Google is getting ready to release its StreetLearn dataset for training machine-learning models to navigate cities without a map. The StreetLearn environment relies on images from Google Street View and has been used by Google DeepMind to train a software agent to navigate various western cities without reference to a map or GPS co-ordinates, using only visual clues such as landmarks as it wanders the streets. The StreetLearn environment encompasses multiple regions within the centers of the cities of London, Paris and New York. It is made up of cropped 360-degree panoramic images of street scenes from Street View, each measuring 84 x 84 pixels. Each panoramic image is a node in larger network or graph of images, with up to 65,000 nodes per 5km city region, and multiple regions per city. Each region has a distinct urban setting, for instance differing amount of construction and varying numbers of parks and bridges.

These are three of the biggest problems facing today's AI
Speaking to attendees at a deep learning conference in London last month, there was one particularly noteworthy recurring theme: humility, or at least, the need for it. While companies like Google are confidently pronouncing that we live in an "AI-first age," with machine learning breaking new ground in areas like speech and image recognition, those at the front lines of AI research are keen to point out that there's still a lot of work to be done. Just because we have digital assistants that sound like the talking computers in movies doesn't mean we're much closer to creating true artificial intelligence. Problems include the need for vast amounts of data to power deep learning systems; our inability to create AI that is good at more than one task; and the lack of insight we have into how these systems work in the first place. Machine learning in 2016 is creating brilliant tools, but they can be hard to explain, costly to train, and often mysterious even to their creators.

Why data is the new coal
"Is data the new oil?" asked proponents of big data back in 2012 in Forbes magazine. By 2016, and the rise of big data's turbo-powered cousin deep learning, we had become more certain: "Data is the new oil," stated Fortune. Amazon's Neil Lawrence has a slightly different analogy: Data, he says, is coal. Not coal today, though, but coal in the early days of the 18th century, when Thomas Newcomen invented the steam engine. A Devonian ironmonger, Newcomen built his device to pump water out of the south west's prolific tin mines. The problem, as Lawrence told the Re-Work conference on Deep Learning in London, was that the pump was rather more useful to those who had a lot of coal than those who didn't: it was good, but not good enough to buy coal in to run it.

Artificial intelligence has never been as present -- or as cool -- as it is today. And, after years on the periphery, deep learning has become the most successful and most popular machine learning method around. DL algorithms can now identify objects better than most humans, outperform doctors at diagnosing diseases, and beat grandmasters at their own board game. In the last year alone, Google DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated one of the world's greatest Go player -- a feat most experts guessed would take another decade at least. Some of the finest minds in AI are at the Re•Work Deep Learning Summit in London this week to discuss the entrenched challenges and emerging solutions to artificial intelligence through deep learning. Researchers from Google, Apple, Microsoft, Oxford, and Cambridge (to name a few) are in attendance or giving talks.
