Plus: social media firms have agreed to be assessed on how effectively they protect teens' mental health A "QuitGPT" campaign is urging people to cancel their ChatGPT subscriptions In September, Alfred Stephen, a freelance software developer in Singapore, purchased a ChatGPT Plus subscription, which costs $20 a month and offers more access to advanced models, to speed up his work. But he grew frustrated with the chatbot's coding abilities and its gushing, meandering replies. Then he came across a post on Reddit about a campaign called QuitGPT. QuitGPT is one of the latest salvos in a growing movement by activists and disaffected users to cancel their subscriptions. In just the past few weeks, users have flooded Reddit with stories about quitting the chatbot. And while it's unclear how many users have joined the boycott, there's no denying QuitGPT is getting attention.

From gymnastics to virtual nonholonomic constraints: energy injection, dissipation, and regulation for the acrobot

In this article we study virtual nonholonomic constraints, which are relations between the generalized coordinates and momenta of a mechanical system that can be enforced via feedback control. We design a constraint which emulates gymnastics giant motion in an acrobot, and prove that this constraint can inject or dissipate energy based on the sign of a design parameter. The proposed constraint is tested both in simulation and experimentally on a real-world acrobot, demonstrating highly effective energy regulation properties and robustness to a variety of disturbances.

The 2023 World Championships last October marked the first time an AI judging system was used on every apparatus in a gymnastics competition. There are obvious upsides to using this kind of technology: AI could help take the guesswork out of the judging technicalities. It could even help to eliminate biases, making the sport both more fair and more transparent.
How AI is changing gymnastics judging
These championships were the first time the technology, formally known as the Judging Support System, or JSS, had been used on every apparatus in a gymnastics competition--and its first use in a competition that could make or break an athlete's Olympic dreams. While the AI judging system did not replace human judges--rather, it was available to help judges review routines in case of an inquiry or a "blocked score"--it still marked a watershed moment for the sport that was years in the making. The International Gymnastics Federation (known as FIG, its initials in French) first used JSS to judge pommel horse, rings, and vault back at the 2019 World Championships before adding more events at different competitions each year. There are obvious upsides to using this kind of technology in competition. Human gymnastics judges must have an eye for quick, tiny movements: the point of a toe, the angle of a split (did she hit 180?), the slightest bend at the hip. AI could help take the guesswork out of the technicalities.
Temporal Analysis on Topics Using Word2Vec

The present study proposes a novel method of trend detection and visualization - more specifically, modeling the change in a topic over time. Where current models used for the identification and visualization of trends only convey the popularity of a singular word based on stochastic counting of usage, the approach in the present study illustrates the popularity and direction that a topic is moving in. The direction in this case is a distinct subtopic within the selected corpus. Such trends are generated by modeling the movement of a topic by using k-means clustering and cosine similarity to group the distances between clusters over time. In a convergent scenario, it can be inferred that the topics as a whole are meshing (tokens between topics, becoming interchangeable). On the contrary, a divergent scenario would imply that each topics' respective tokens would not be found in the same context (the words are increasingly different to each other). The methodology was tested on a group of articles from various media houses present in the 20 Newsgroups dataset.

Google's Bard chatbot launches in US and UK
Google's Bard chatbot is launching on Tuesday in the UK and US, as the company completes its dash to release a competitor to Bing Chat and ChatGPT. It is seen as a do-or-die moment for the company, whose profitable web search service risks being outcompeted by artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots – even if those chatbots currently have problems in consistently returning accurate and useful results. Describing the service as an "experiment", Google's Jack Krawczyk, the product lead for Bard, said the company was "extremely excited … watching how people are using this product in a way that's boosting their creativity. It's helping them accelerate their ideas, and is helping them really fuel their curiosity. "We feel like we've reached the limit of the testing phase of this experiment," Krawczyk added, "and now we want to gradually begin to roll it out.

The study, by Freeview, using artificial intelligence to decipher the expressions of participants while they watched various sports on their home devices. The findings suggest that tennis sparks the strongest euphoric response, closely followed by gymnastics, football and cricket. Probing the State of the Art: A Critical Look at Visual Representation Evaluation

Self-supervised research improved greatly over the past half decade, with much of the growth being driven by objectives that are hard to quantitatively compare. These techniques include colorization, cyclical consistency, and noise-contrastive estimation from image patches. Consequently, the field has settled on a handful of measurements that depend on linear probes to adjudicate which approaches are the best. Our first contribution is to show that this test is insufficient and that models which perform poorly (strongly) on linear classification can perform strongly (weakly) on more involved tasks like temporal activity localization. Our second contribution is to analyze the capabilities of five different representations. And our third contribution is a much needed new dataset for temporal activity localization.
