We introduce ECHo (Event Causality Inference via Human-Centric Reasoning), a diagnostic dataset of event causality inference grounded in visio-linguistic social scenarios. ECHo employs real-world human-centric deductive information building on a television crime drama. ECHo requires the Theory-of-Mind (ToM) ability to understand and reason about social interactions based on multimodal information. Using ECHo, we propose a unified Chain-of-Thought (CoT) framework to assess the reasoning capability of current AI systems. Our ToM-enhanced CoT pipeline accommodates various large foundation models in both zero-shot and few-shot visio-linguistic reasoning. We use this framework to scrutinize recent large foundation models such as InstructGPT and MiniGPT-4 on three diagnostic human-centric tasks. Further analysis demonstrates ECHo as a challenging dataset to expose imperfections and inconsistencies in reasoning. Our data and code are publicly available at https://github.com/YuxiXie/ECHo.

One additional "passenger" on the real flight was a corned-beef sandwich that Young smuggled aboard in his pocket. While John Young, who died on Jan. 5 at age 87, is famous for his Apollo 16 moonwalks and his role as commander of the first space shuttle mission, the NASA astronaut is also remembered for a small scandal he triggered with a sneaky act: smuggling a corned-beef sandwich into space. Young slipped the sandwich into his pocket just before launching on Gemini 3 on March 23, 1965.

On March 21, 1966, NASA announced its crew selection for the AS-204 mission -- the first crewed mission in the program aimed at reaching the moon. Astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee were chosen to carry out a 14-day low orbital test of the Apollo Command/Service Module, with a launch date of Feb. 21, 1967. The men were well suited to the task. Grissom was a decorated fighter pilot and veteran of projects Mercury and Gemini, White was the first American to perform a spacewalk during Project Gemini and Chaffee had served with both men as the capsule communicator for the Gemini 4 mission. As the astronauts spent months training for their mission, the Command/Service Module was tweaked, modified and finally mated to its Saturn launch vehicle at Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 34.
