What is human composting?

Popular Science

Science Ask Us Anything What is human composting? A new'Ask Us Anything' podcast episode digs into how human bodies can be turned into nutrient-rich soil. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Do you know what want to have happen to your body after you die? Do you want to be cremated, buried, or given an epic Viking burial? While it may seem macabre, it's important to think about so our loved ones don't have to while their in the throes of grief. On this episode of, editors Sarah Durn and Annie Colbert dig into a novel way people are choosing to handle their bodies after they die: human composting.

Donny Osmond adds AI version of himself as a teen to Las Vegas residency

FOX News

Donny Osmond shared his views on artificial intelligence (AI) and explained why he loves "what it can do." Donny Osmond is bringing on a new co-star for his Las Vegas residency: himself. "We are going to be making history together," the legendary crooner told his fans in a video he shared to Instagram. "Can you imagine sharing the stage with your 14-year-old self?" He said, "Thanks to some mind-blowing AI and CGI technology, I'm going to be talking and singing with Donny Osmond โ€“ you know, the one from 1972."

Hidding the Ghostwriters: An Adversarial Evaluation of AI-Generated Student Essay Detection

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Large language models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable capabilities in text generation tasks. However, the utilization of these models carries inherent risks, including but not limited to plagiarism, the dissemination of fake news, and issues in educational exercises. Although several detectors have been proposed to address these concerns, their effectiveness against adversarial perturbations, specifically in the context of student essay writing, remains largely unexplored. This paper aims to bridge this gap by constructing AIG-ASAP, an AI-generated student essay dataset, employing a range of text perturbation methods that are expected to generate high-quality essays while evading detection. Through empirical experiments, we assess the performance of current AIGC detectors on the AIG-ASAP dataset. The results reveal that the existing detectors can be easily circumvented using straightforward automatic adversarial attacks. Specifically, we explore word substitution and sentence substitution perturbation methods that effectively evade detection while maintaining the quality of the generated essays. This highlights the urgent need for more accurate and robust methods to detect AI-generated student essays in the education domain.

Using large language models to study human memory for meaningful narratives

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

One of the most impressive achievements of the AI revolution is the development of large language models that can generate meaningful text and respond to instructions in plain English with no additional training necessary. Here we show that language models can be used as a scientific instrument for studying human memory for meaningful material. We developed a pipeline for designing large scale memory experiments and analyzing the obtained results. We performed online memory experiments with a large number of participants and collected recognition and recall data for narratives of different lengths. We found that both recall and recognition performance scale linearly with narrative length. Furthermore, in order to investigate the role of narrative comprehension in memory, we repeated these experiments using scrambled versions of the presented stories. We found that even though recall performance declined significantly, recognition remained largely unaffected. Interestingly, recalls in this condition seem to follow the original narrative order rather than the scrambled presentation, pointing to a contextual reconstruction of the story in memory.

Let's Do a Thought Experiment: Using Counterfactuals to Improve Moral Reasoning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Language models still struggle on moral reasoning, despite their impressive performance in many other tasks. In particular, the Moral Scenarios task in MMLU (Multi-task Language Understanding) is among the worst performing tasks for many language models, including GPT-3. In this work, we propose a new prompting framework, Thought Experiments, to teach language models to do better moral reasoning using counterfactuals. Experiment results show that our framework elicits counterfactual questions and answers from the model, which in turn helps improve the accuracy on Moral Scenarios task by 9-16% compared to other zero-shot baselines. Interestingly, unlike math reasoning tasks, zero-shot Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning doesn't work out of the box, and even reduces accuracy by around 4% compared to direct zero-shot. We further observed that with minimal human supervision in the form of 5 few-shot examples, the accuracy of the task can be improved to as much as 80%.

Artificial Intelligence Explained for My Grandpa

#artificialintelligence

My grandpa recently discovered that I've been writing medium articles. After reading a few that I wrote about AI, he sent me a text asking for me to write an article explaining it to "seniors" like him. This is my best attempt at that. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a phrase used by computer scientists to describe programs that can do things that require applying knowledge. But isn't any computer program'applying' the knowledge given to it in its own programming?

Want to Get Junior Away from That Screen?

Children's absorption in screens is a bane of modern parenting--and such dependency has reached alarming heights during the pandemic. Here are some parenting hacks to help wean your little ones off their electronic devices. The martial arts offer a safe platform for releasing energy while gaining valuable self-defense skills. Remember to set reasonable expectations--those flamboyant tornado kicks don't happen overnight. However, once you have attained mastery at the brown-belt level, you are ready to guard your phone or iPad from your children.

Wisdom or artificial intelligence?

In a self-congratulatory mood, I announced, "You know, I have a dinner date today with Mr Kaushal... my student." My better half replied, "Yes, we know. My grandson, studying in class IX, said sarcastically, "Enjoy your dinner, grandpa. Teachers' Day dinners are not going to last long." Indignant and a little annoyed, I asked, "What do you mean?" "Sorry, grandpa.
