GoPro pushes update to its entry-level Hero camera, adding 4:3 video for social clips

Engadget

GoPro is rolling out a software update for its entry-level Hero camera that allows users to shoot 4:3 video in 4K. This is great for the kinds of clips that populate social media sites like TikTok, as the footage is taller. The update is available for free via the company's GoPro Quik app on iOS and Android. Obviously, the new aspect ratio is intended for social media content, but shooting in 4:3 has several use case scenarios. For instance, it can be the perfect choice for capturing video from a first-person perspective.

Insta360's Ace Pro is a Leica-branded action cam with AI enhancements

Engadget

We've already seen DJI's Osmo Action 4 and GoPro's Hero 12 representing the rugged action cams of 2023, and now, it's Insta360's turn to unveil its take on this category -- one that focuses more on video quality than, say, its Go series' versatility. In a nutshell, Insta360's brand new Ace Pro can be described as a GoPro on steroids, thanks to its handy 2.4-inch flip touchscreen, 1/1.3-inch sensor, Leica tuning and, most notably, 5nm AI neural processor. You'll also get the usual "FlowState Stabilization," IPX8 waterproof rating (down to 33ft or 10m) and swappable battery (up to 100 minutes in 4K@30fps Active HDR; fast charging at up to 80 percent in 22 minutes, or to 100 percent in 46 minutes). Insta360 claims that combining its AI denoising feature with its new image sensor, the Ace Pro produces clearer and more stable low-light results for both videos (up to 4K@30fps in "PureVideo" mode) and stills (up to 48 megapixels). There's also an "Active HDR Video" mode which turns on automatically when lighting conditions are met, with the company emphasizing on improved color accuracy here -- we'll take a closer look at this in our review later.

Startup Farmers Learn the Art of Animal Agriculture in "Chicken Stories"

The New Yorker

At a startup farm outside of Oakland, a young man reads on his phone in a dim bedroom. He's not scrolling through social-media feeds or playing games; he's trying to learn about caring for his livestock. A Siri-like voice-over says, "I found one article on how to take care of baby chicks." On the floor, a large blue bucket sits under the warm glow of a heat lamp, with about a dozen fluffy chicks inside. "Failure to maintain a warm environment will quickly prove to be fatal," the digital voice explains.

This role offers the flexibility to work from home, within proximity to an office location. On this team you are going to be responsible for delivering automated cinematic storytelling solutions for advanced video editing features to easily build incredible videos. These features are built for mobile and desktop based on a variety of technical challenges in the areas of media understanding. The person in this role will be responsible for media analysis, collecting, interpreting large dataset and extracting valuable meaning. In this role, you will be a part of a computer vision and machine learning team, exploring new ways to streamline the editing process, researching and applying a range of cutting edge research techniques to propose advanced editing features for the GoPro users.

A Multi Camera Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Pipeline for Object Detection in Cultural Sites through Adversarial Learning and Self-Training

Pasqualino, Giovanni, Furnari, Antonino, Farinella, Giovanni Maria

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Object detection algorithms allow to enable many interesting applications which can be implemented in different devices, such as smartphones and wearable devices. In the context of a cultural site, implementing these algorithms in a wearable device, such as a pair of smart glasses, allow to enable the use of augmented reality (AR) to show extra information about the artworks and enrich the visitors' experience during their tour. However, object detection algorithms require to be trained on many well annotated examples to achieve reasonable results. This brings a major limitation since the annotation process requires human supervision which makes it expensive in terms of time and costs. A possible solution to reduce these costs consist in exploiting tools to automatically generate synthetic labeled images from a 3D model of the site. However, models trained with synthetic data do not generalize on real images acquired in the target scenario in which they are supposed to be used. Furthermore, object detectors should be able to work with different wearable devices or different mobile devices, which makes generalization even harder. In this paper, we present a new dataset collected in a cultural site to study the problem of domain adaptation for object detection in the presence of multiple unlabeled target domains corresponding to different cameras and a labeled source domain obtained considering synthetic images for training purposes. We present a new domain adaptation method which outperforms current state-of-the-art approaches combining the benefits of aligning the domains at the feature and pixel level with a self-training process. We release the dataset at the following link https://iplab.dmi.unict.it/OBJ-MDA/ and the code of the proposed architecture at https://github.com/fpv-iplab/STMDA-RetinaNet.

GoPro's 'Bones' is a stripped down Hero 10 Black for FPV drones

Engadget

GoPro has unveiled the Hero 10 Black Bones, a lightweight version of the Hero 10 Black designed for FPV and "Cinewhoop" drones that have taken off in popularity. It offers features like HyperSmooth 4.0 and 5.3K video, but is light enough to be mounted on 3-inch class and larger drones. "Bones is an important step in our strategy to leverage GoPro's core camera-technology to produce derivative products that address the needs of a specific audience of customers," said GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman. "Bones delivers Hero 10 Black image quality and performance in a lightweight body that is ideal for aerial cinematography." At 54 grams, the Hero 10 Black Bones weighs 100 grams less than the Hero 10 black, making it the lightest GoPro ever, the company said. Helping keep the weight down is the fact that it doesn't carry its own battery but is instead powered by the drone's own 2S-6S or 5-27V batteries -- a typical setup on FPV drones.

The Morning After: GoPro's new battery grip fixes the Hero 10's biggest issue

Engadget

For GoPro cameras, battery life has never been a strong feature -- in fact, the Hero 9 outlasted the Hero 10 by almost half an hour when we tested out the newer camera. Now, the company has launched a new battery grip, called Volta. Combined with the GoPro's own battery, the Volta grip can deliver up to four hours of 5.3K recording at 30 fps. It also comes with integrated camera buttons to give you access to one-handed controls while the GoPro is mounted. You can even use it as a remote control up to 98 feet away, and if you need a tripod for your shoot, you can flip out its built-in legs.

GoPro's new Quik app makes highlight reels from your favorite photos

Engadget

Since 2019, GoPro has worked to streamline its two mobile apps into a single experience. As of today, that project is complete, with the company merging its GoPro and Quik apps into a single offering named after the latter. In its newest iteration, Quik also has a new purpose. According to the company, the app is something anyone can use, whether they have a GoPro camera or not, to manage their media library and rediscover their favorite memories. At a time when so many photo library apps are adding AI components to help people cull and organize their best shots and clips, GoPro's approach is refreshingly old-school.
