This past Friday, I asked John Mueller of Google a bit more on if and how Google may use machine learning for adjusting the weights of various ranking signals. The short answer is, Google may or may not do this, depending on the specific ranking signal. But keep in mind, I narrowed the question specifically to if and how Google may use machine learning for adjusting the weights of individual ranking signals. It may be also the case machine learning is used amongst multiple ranking signals or to maybe even create new ones based on the query. It is hard to know for sure.

There has been plenty of speculation about just how much Google uses machine learning when it comes to the search algorithm, especially outside of RankBrain itself. During a recent Google Webmaster Office Hours, the role of machine learning in the algo came up. The question was specifically about Panda and whether it uses a machine learning algo classifier on sample pages to train high quality versus low quality content. And while we know Google does use machine learning for RankBrain, which enables Google to serve high quality results for the type of search queries that are never or rarely seen, they haven't talked much about it from outside of RankBrain. I don't actually know what the Panda algorithm uses so I can't really answer that question for you. He does clarify later that it wouldn't be out of the question for Google Panda to have a machine learning component, but he doesn't know.

Hate crimes unfortunately happen all over the world, such as in America, and according to Google, it is difficult to track since apparently very little official data is collected on such incidents, which makes it harder for journalists to do their jobs on reporting on such issues since there isn't much to go on. However that's something that Google wants to address using machine learning. The company has announced that Google News Lab will be working with ProPublica in launching a new machine learning tool that will help track hate crimes, and in turn will also help journalists find information that they can use for their reporting. According to Google, "The new Index will help make this data easier to understand and visualize. It is one of the first visualisations to use machine learning to generate its content using the Google Natural Language API, which analyses text and extracts information about people, places, and events. In this case, it helps reporters by digging out locations, names and other useful data from the 3,000-plus news reports."

Google is using machine learning to improve Google Forms in a bid to make the tool smarter and easier to use so that people have to be less hands-on with it, while also saving them more time so they can be more efficient and devote time to other equally or perhaps more important tasks. As part of the update to Google Forms, one of the improvements included is intelligent response validation, and from time to time (whenever it's possible to do so) Google Forms will make a suggestion to users to validate a response that was issued by the person filling out a Google Form based on the questions that are asked by the form's creator. Google does note however that suggestions for validation won't be there for every single response. Also in the presence of saving time for users, Google Forms will now allow you to set up pre-configured preferences for future forms that you create so you don't have to choose certain elements each time you set up a new form, such as the option for always collecting email addresses or making questions required. Another new change is cross-file sharing support.
