Google LLC today announced some major breakthroughs in its artificial intelligence capabilities, including a new, next-generation conversational language model that creates far more realistic and interesting dialogue than anything it has come up with so far. Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications was announced during its virtual I/O conference today, and displayed some huge leaps in AI language understanding too. LaMDA's skills were shown off in two separate conversations. In the first, LaMDA pretended to be the dwarf planet Pluto and answered questions on what people could expect to see if they visited. In the second, it played the role of a paper airplane, and discussed what it's like flying through the air and how to make a plane that travels farther.

One of the effects of the COVID-19 public health emergency is that it has added urgency and speed to technology transformations that were already occurring, such as cloud migration and deployments of artificial intelligence and machine learning. At few places is that shift more pronounced than at Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic, which six months before the pandemic arrived in the United States had embarked on a decade-long strategic partnership with Google Cloud. "Our partnership will propel a multitude of AI projects currently spearheaded by our scientists and physicians, and will provide technology tools to unlock the value of data and deliver answers at a scale much greater than today," said Mayo CIO Cris Ross at the time. Pichai recently called for "clear-eyed" AI regulation amid a rise in fake videos and abuse of facial recognition technology.

New research from Google shows how machine learning could one day be used to detect signs of lung cancer earlier than often occurs today. Early warning: Danial Tse, a researcher at Google, developed an algorithm that beat a number of trained radiologists in testing. Tse and colleagues trained a deep-learning algorithm to detect malignant lung nodules in more than 42,000 CT scans. The resulting algorithms turned up 11% fewer false positives and 5% fewer false negatives than their human counterparts. The work is described in a paper published in the journal Nature today.

Google's decision not to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for aiding war weapons or surveillance technology, may well be the start of a series of moves that could curb its possible misuse. The American tech giant had entered into a partnership with the Pentagon to use AI to review drone footage, in a move that was later seen as controversial. Google employees themselves had signed a petition, asking company CEO Sundar Pichai not to extend the contract. This led to Google spelling out its policy on the matter. The company said those technologies that cause or are likely to cause overall harm will not be encouraged.

We're roughly halfway through 2018, and one of the most important AI stories to emerge so far is Project Maven and its fallout at Google. The program to use AI to analyze drone video footage began last year, and this week we learned of the Pentagon's plans to expand Maven and establish a Joint Artificial Intelligence Center. We also learned that Google believed it would make hundreds of millions of dollars from participating in the Maven project and that Maven was reportedly tied directly to a cloud computing contract worth billions of dollars. Today, news broke that Google will discontinue its Maven contract when it expires next year. The company is reportedly drafting a military projects policy that is due out in the coming weeks.
