AI Is Taking Water From the Desert

The Atlantic - Technology

One scorching day this past September, I made the dangerous decision to try to circumnavigate some data centers. The ones I chose sit between a regional airport and some farm fields in Goodyear, Arizona, half an hour's drive west of downtown Phoenix. When my Uber pulled up beside the unmarked buildings, the temperature was 97 degrees Fahrenheit. The air crackled with a latent energy, and some kind of pulsating sound was emanating from the electric wires above my head, or maybe from the buildings themselves. With no shelter from the blinding sunlight, I began to lose my sense of what was real. Microsoft announced its plans for this location, and two others not so far away, back in 2019--a week after the company revealed its initial 1 billion investment in OpenAI, the buzzy start-up that would later release ChatGPT.

When the rubber meets the road, how will autonomous trucks handle blowouts?

#artificialintelligence

Tire blowouts lead to dozens of highway deaths every year. For autonomous trucks, they pose a prickly problem: how to regain control without a human driver at the wheel. "We can talk about redundancy in our sensors, machine-learning algorithms and all this fancy stuff until we're blue in the face," said Don Burnette, co-founder and CEO of Kodiak Robotics. "But at the end of the day, if you press the brake pedal and your tires don't respond, it's not useful." Kodiak is working with Bridgestone Americas to share information that could lead to more robust tire safety.

'Finch': Even a post-apocalyptic hellscape is OK with Tom Hanks & a dog

Boston Herald

The Tom Hanks' vehicle "Finch" is "Cast Away" revisited. Instead of a young(ish) Hanks stranded on a desert island, we have an old Hanks stranded in a post-apocalyptic world, where a solar flare has destroyed the ozone layer. The UV rays are deadly. The temperature in direct sunlight is 150 degrees, and the empty, dust-covered and windswept streets are littered with desiccated corpses.. Hanks plays the eponymous Finch Weinberg, a tech genius, who lives in St. Louis, Mo., in a warehouse with his real dog Goodyear and his R2D2-like robo-dog Dewy. Finch can only go outside if he wears a spacesuit-like outfit with a space helmet and cooling device attached.

Smart Tires Hit the Road

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

The technology is geared toward vehicles that specialize in last-mile delivery, which refers to the final step in getting packages from a distribution center to the customer. The market for last-mile delivery has picked up as online shopping has soared during the coronavirus pandemic. Goodyear's new technology, announced Wednesday, is called SightLine and includes a sensor and proprietary machine-learning algorithms that can predict flat tires or other issues days ahead of time, by measuring tire wear, pressure, road-surface conditions and many other factors. The Morning Download delivers daily insights and news on business technology from the CIO Journal team. The surge of last-mile deliveries during the pandemic means that a lot of vehicles are on the road, "stopping and going, hitting curbs, causing damage to the tires, causing breakdowns and congestion," said Richard Kramer, chief executive of Akron, Ohio-based Goodyear.

How Goodyear is using Data, AI to create tyres of future

#artificialintelligence

Goodyear has developed a'concept tire' which uses AI to learn from driver behaviour. The smart tyre releases a synthetic material to alter the composition of the tire to adapt the way the vehicle is driven to make it more "personalised" to the driver. Goodyear's tech could enable predictions based on data gathered from these smart tires for the use of authorities to maintain roads effectively, leading to less vehicle wear-and-tear and reducing accident rates.

How Goodyear Is Using Data, Artificial Intelligence And Digital Twins To Create The Tyres Of The Future

#artificialintelligence

The way we drive is changing. Globally, trends like urbanization, carpooling, and eventually, autonomous vehicles will mean that the demands we place on our vehicles will change, too. To meet this challenge, the design and function of every vehicular part must be re-imagined to fit these needs, and this includes the tire. Goodyear to unveil tires for flying cars at Geneva auto show

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Goodyear AERO concept tire is a two-in-one tire for driving on the road and a propeller for flying. Goodyear isn't just prepping for self-driving cars -- it's getting ready for ones that fly. The company is unveiling a concept tire for flying vehicles Tuesday at the 89th annual Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. The Goodyear AERO would operate both as a tire for driving on the road and as a "propeller" for airborne travel. The AERO is a multi-modal tilt-rotor concept and would use magnetic propulsion, the company said.
