Royal Caribbean Leaning on AI to Manage Pricing More Effectively

#artificialintelligence

Royal Caribbean International is looking to artificial intelligence (AI) to help manage the millions of price points it offers. "Even within each ship there are multiple inventory types ranging from a typical interior cabin, the most basic stay, to areas that can hold up to 12 people and are over 1,000 square feet," Michael Goldner, Vice president, Revenue Management, Royal Caribbean International, told Hospitality Net. Dream Cruises to Debut World's Longest Roller Coaster at... Virgin Voyages Will Allow Cruisers to'Shake for Champagne... For a long time, inventory has typically been managed manually by a team of revenue management analysts. However, it's appearing more likely that, in the future, these analysts will be managing controls to change the price rather than relying on a system to manually change it.

The cruise line is on-boarding AI. Customers today want options and flexibility-- if businesses want to remain competitive and scale, that often means having vast, complex inventory. But that presents another challenge; ensuring that inventory-- whether it's clothing, hotel rooms, holiday packages, or otherwise-- is managed in a way that optimizes sales and revenue, which can be sold across a multitude of channels. At any given point, the US-headquartered Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has 4.5 million price points available. In an interview with Hospitality Net, Michael Goldner, Vice President of Revenue Management of the cruise line said there is a "price on everything".

Machine learning enhances diabetes care, education

#artificialintelligence

Machine learning has immense potential for improving diabetes care, particularly when used by diabetes care and education specialists, according to two presenters at the American Association of Diabetes Educators annual meeting. "We are in no way saying, and I in no way believe at all, that machine learning will replace diabetes education," Mark Heyman, PhD, CDE, vice president of clinical operations of medical technology company One Drop, said during the presentation. "But we really want to understand how it fits within the context of the role of the educator." With new technology making it easier than ever to record information about blood glucose levels, physical activity and meals, among other parameters, the amount of personal health information is exploding. Finding easy ways to put these data to use can be a challenge, which is what machine learning aims to address.

When Will Artificial Intelligence Replace This Man?

A 25-year-old Erik Spoelstra used to sit in a storage room in the old Miami Arena, evaluating hours of game film to review player performance as an entry-level NBA video coordinator. Eventually, he climbed out of the audio visual muck to become head coach of the NBA's Miami Heat, where he would go on to win two championships. It's a classic story of rags to riches--rising from junior video coordinator to head coach in about 13 years--and it may now be unlikely to ever happen again, as computers take over the position that gave Spoelstra his start. "If an AI were fed videos of a huge number of past NBA games, and were smart enough to understand the events occurring in the games, then it could do a better job at making tactical basketball decisions like choosing starting lineups," said Ben Goertzel, a prominent futurist and lead researcher in the OpenCog AI lab at Hong Kong's Polytechnic University. "As AIs with robust video understanding become widespread, I'd expect that we could see AI sports assistants start to play a serious role," he said.
