With summer vacations still stretching off into the distance, taking advantage of Prime Day board game deals or snagging some discounted toys could be a very smart move. The WIRED Reviews team has a gaggle of kids of all ages between us, and most of us are still big kids at heart, so we've tried a lot of board games and toys over the years. In-person competition is a no-go in many disciplines amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but speed cubers will be still able to battle opponents remotely in the Rubik's Cube World Cup. Rubik's has revealed the Connected Cube, which links to your phone or tablet and tracks your solve times and progress in real-time. It's more of a traditional cube than GoCube, which is largely a STEM-focused toy. Both use the same platform and can connect to the Rubik's Arena community, which has almost 47,000 players. As such, amateur and professional cubers can take part in this year's World Cup without having to travel, as long as they have a Connected Cube or GoCube. Qualifiers start August 15th and run through October 10th.

One of the world's oldest and most popular toys is getting a face-lift. Israel-based startup Particula has unveiled its spin on the Rubik's cube, dubbed the GoCube, that can connect to your phone and enables users to play against other people. It marks a major step up from when the original Rubik's cube, developed by Hungarian sculptor Erno Rubik, was first released in 1974. Since then, over 350 million Rubik's cubes have been sold worldwide.
