Google Is Adding an 'AI Inbox' to Gmail That Summarizes Emails
Google Is Adding an'AI Inbox' to Gmail That Summarizes Emails New Gmail features, powered by the Gemini model, are part of Google's continued push for users to incorporate AI into their daily life and conversations. Google is putting even more generative AI tools into Gmail as part of its goal to further personalize user inboxes and streamline searches. On Thursday, the company announced a new "AI Inbox" tab, currently in a beta testing phase, that reads every message in a user's Gmail and suggests a list of to-dos and key topics, based on what it summarizes . In Google's example of what this AI Inbox could look like in Gmail, the new tab takes context from a user's messages and suggests they reschedule their dentist appointment, reply to a request from their child's sports coach, and pay an upcoming fee before the deadline. Also under the AI Inbox tab is a list of important topics worth browsing, nestled beneath the action items at the top.

Urgent warning to all 1.8b Gmail users over 'new wave of threats' stealing accounts... Do this NOW
A new type of email attack is quietly targeting 1.8 billion Gmail users without them ever noticing. Hackers are using Google Gemini, the AI built-in tool in Gmail and Workspace, to trick users into handing over their credentials. Cybersecurity experts found that bad actors are sending emails with hidden instructions that prompt Gemini to generate fake phishing warnings, tricking users into sharing their account password or visiting malicious sites. These emails are crafted to appear urgent and sometimes from a business. By setting the font size to zero and the text color to white, attackers can insert prompts invisible to users but actionable by Gemini.
Warning to all 1.8bn Gmail users over 'devastating' scam stealing banking and sensitive data
All 1.8 billion Gmail users have been issued a'red alert' over a scam that lets hackers gain access to accounts. The attack uses AI to craft deepfake robocalls and malicious emails capable of bypassing security filters. The combination works to convince victims their Gmail account has been compromised. Users receive a phone call that suspicious activity was detected in their account and are told an email is soon to follow with steps to rectify the issue. The email includes a fake website that looks identical to Google's, which prompts users to enter their login credentials.
Google to Gmail users: Coronavirus phishing is targeting you. This is how we hit back ZDNet
Google is adapting its machine-learning models for Gmail security to battle scammers, cybercriminals, and state-sponsored hackers exploiting fear over the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic in phishing email attacks. The company says it blocked 18 million COVID-19 themed phishing emails last week. The blocked COVID-19 phishing emails targeting Gmail users would represent about 2.5% of the 100 million phishing emails Google said in 2019 it blocks daily. Google is also blocking 240 million COVID-related daily spam messages each day. From cancelled conferences to disrupted supply chains, not a corner of the global economy is immune to the spread of COVID-19.

Google is fighting malware on Gmail with machine learning
Email still reigns as one of the most popular places to target users and their data, mainly through the form of malicious attachments. Widely-used email clients such as Outlook, Apple Mail, and Gmail have been great at filtering out emails laced with these types of malware, but Google wants to do even better. Google opts in for more security -- In a blog post on Wednesday, Google announced its expansion with AI to better improve detection and detailed its process for spotting malicious documents. According to the company, 58 percent of all malware targeting Gmail users is spread in this way. The majority of these malicious files, Google says, are Microsoft Office documents.
Google Blocks 100 Million Spam Messages Daily With its A.I. Digital Trends
Effective spam blocking is yet another thing we can add to the ever-growing list of uses for artificial intelligence. Via a Google Cloud blog post published Wednesday, February 6, Google announced that it has been using an A.I. platform to further its spam-blocking endeavors with significant results. The platform, known as TensorFlow, was developed by Google and is "an open-source machine learning (ML) framework." While the platform may sound like a new innovation, TensorFlow was actually launched and open-sourced in 2015. According to Google, TensorFlow is allowing the technology company to block 100 million more spam messages from reaching the inboxes of Gmail users on a daily basis.
Gmail's Smart Reply is an example of what real AI will look like for frontline workers
Google rolled out its Smart Reply feature--which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to scan received emails and suggest responses--to the Gmail app on iOS and Android back in May 2017 to help smartphone users avoid the need to type out full replies on their phones. Now, as Google defaults its 1.4 billion active accounts to the new version of Gmail, all users will have the option to select a Smart Reply on their desktop as well--and many already are. Smart Reply answers account for 10% of all emails sent on the platform, the Wall Street Journal reported. By October, Smart Reply will become a default setting for all Gmail accounts, the report said. When a Gmail user receives an email, Smart Reply presents them with three responses to choose from, based on the content of the email they received.
