QDA-SQL: Questions Enhanced Dialogue Augmentation for Multi-Turn Text-to-SQL

Fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) for specific domain tasks has achieved great success in Text-to-SQL tasks. However, these fine-tuned models often face challenges with multi-turn Text-to-SQL tasks caused by ambiguous or unanswerable questions. It is desired to enhance LLMs to handle multiple types of questions in multi-turn Text-to-SQL tasks. To address this, we propose a novel data augmentation method, called QDA-SQL, which generates multiple types of multi-turn Q\&A pairs by using LLMs. In QDA-SQL, we introduce a novel data augmentation method incorporating validation and correction mechanisms to handle complex multi-turn Text-to-SQL tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that QDA-SQL enables fine-tuned models to exhibit higher performance on SQL statement accuracy and enhances their ability to handle complex, unanswerable questions in multi-turn Text-to-SQL tasks. I teach in the computer science department at Vanderbilt University. In my Algorithms class this past spring, I decided to regularly expose my students to ChatGPT so they could see firsthand that it can't replace their critical thinking skills. I did this primarily for selfish reasons--like most instructors, I wanted my students to rely on their own creative problem-solving abilities rather than ChatGPT to answer their homework questions. I hypothesized that demonstrating the fallibility of ChatGPT would be a more effective deterrent than a syllabus policy statement. I just needed to find its weaknesses when it came to our course materials.

In 1962, when astronaut John Glenn was preparing for an orbital mission, mathematician Katherine Johnson was called by the US space agency Nasa for an important task: calculating trajectories. According to Nasa's website, the complexity of the orbital flight, which would make Glenn the first American to orbit Earth, required the construction of a communications network that would link tracking stations around the world to computers in Washington, Florida and Bermuda. These computers were programmed with orbital equations that would control the trajectory of Glenn's Friendship 7 spacecraft. But these machines were also prone to glitches. So, Glenn asked engineers to enlist Johnson to run the same numbers through the same equations programmed into the computer, but by hand, on a desktop mechanical calculating machine.
