Antarctica's Doomsday Glacier could'snowball' towards collapse, as a study shows the ice is melting faster than expected. Scientists from the University of Edinburgh predict that the glacier - whose official name is Thwaites - could shed 200 gigatonnes of ice every single year by 2067. That is more than the current ice loss of the entire Antarctic Ice Sheet, which has been losing 150 gigatonnes of ice per year for the last two decades.

The Justice Department Just Released More Epstein Files
The latest Epstein Files release appears to contain hundreds of photographs along with court records and other materials. Over the weekend, the Justice Department released three new data sets comprising files related to Jeffrey Epstein . The DOJ had previously released nearly 4,000 documents prior to the Friday midnight deadline required by the Epstein Files Transparency Act . As with Friday's release, the new tranche appears to contain hundreds of photographs, along with various court records pertaining to Epstein. There are around 1,200 pages in all, including images WIRED is currently going through the materials and will update with more detail.

The Doomsday Glacier Is Getting Closer and Closer to Irreversible Collapse
An analysis of the expansion of cracks in the Thwaites Glacier over the past 20 years suggests that a total collapse could be only a matter of time. Known as the "Doomsday Glacier," the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is one of the most rapidly changing glaciers on Earth, and its future evolution is one of the biggest unknowns when it comes to predicting global sea level rise. The eastern ice shelf of the Thwaites Glacier is supported at its northern end by a ridge of the ocean floor. However, over the past two decades, cracks in the upper reaches of the glacier have increased rapidly, weakening its structural stability. A new study by the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) presents a detailed record of this gradual collapse process.

Comparison Study: Glacier Calving Front Delineation in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images With Deep Learning
Gourmelon, Nora, Heidler, Konrad, Loebel, Erik, Cheng, Daniel, Klink, Julian, Dong, Anda, Wu, Fei, Maul, Noah, Koch, Moritz, Dreier, Marcel, Pyles, Dakota, Seehaus, Thorsten, Braun, Matthias, Maier, Andreas, Christlein, Vincent
Calving front position variation of marine-terminating glaciers is an indicator of ice mass loss and a crucial parameter in numerical glacier models. Deep Learning (DL) systems can automatically extract this position from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery, enabling continuous, weather- and illumination-independent, large-scale monitoring. This study presents the first comparison of DL systems on a common calving front benchmark dataset. A multi-annotator study with ten annotators is performed to contrast the best-performing DL system against human performance. The best DL model's outputs deviate 221 m on average, while the average deviation of the human annotators is 38 m. This significant difference shows that current DL systems do not yet match human performance and that further research is needed to enable fully automated monitoring of glacier calving fronts. The study of Vision Transformers, foundation models, and the inclusion and processing strategy of more information are identified as avenues for future research.

Multi-SpaCE: Multi-Objective Subsequence-based Sparse Counterfactual Explanations for Multivariate Time Series Classification
Deep Learning systems excel in complex tasks but often lack transparency, limiting their use in critical applications. Counterfactual explanations, a core tool within eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), offer insights into model decisions by identifying minimal changes to an input to alter its predicted outcome. However, existing methods for time series data are limited by univariate assumptions, rigid constraints on modifications, or lack of validity guarantees. This paper introduces Multi-SpaCE, a multi-objective counterfactual explanation method for multivariate time series. Using non-dominated ranking genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), Multi-SpaCE balances proximity, sparsity, plausibility, and contiguity. Unlike most methods, it ensures perfect validity, supports multivariate data and provides a Pareto front of solutions, enabling flexibility to different end-user needs. Comprehensive experiments in diverse datasets demonstrate the ability of Multi-SpaCE to consistently achieve perfect validity and deliver superior performance compared to existing methods.
Antarctica's 'doomsday' glacier is heading for catastrophic collapse
A six-year investigation into the vast Thwaites glacier in Antarctica has concluded with a grim outlook on its future. Often dubbed the "doomsday glacier", this huge mass of ice is comparable in size to Britain or Florida and its collapse alone would raise sea levels by 65 centimetres. Worse still, this is expected to trigger a more widespread loss of the ice sheet covering West Antarctica, causing a calamitous sea level rise of 3.3 metres and threatening cities like New York, Kolkata and Shanghai. It is an extremely remote and difficult area to get to, but the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC), a joint UK-US research programme, has managed to deploy 100 scientists there over the past six years, using planes, ships and underwater robots to study the dynamics of this ice in detail. "It was a tremendous challenge, and yet we really learned a lot," says Ted Scambos at University of Colorado Boulder.
