Heartwarming video shows boy, three, using bionic hand for the first time
A heartwarming video has revealed the moment a three-year-old boy tries out a bionic arm for the first time. Giulio Spaziana, from Pomezia, Italy, was born without a forearm or hand on his right side. But doctors have now fitted him with a prosthetic limb which he can control using his electrical signals from his brain as though it were a real hand. In moving footage, he is seen grinning as he opens and closes the hand in a grabbing motion and shows off to his mother when he picks up a ruler unassisted. In a video filmed by his mother Giulio can be seen grinning as he uses the new prosthetic to pick up a ruler in the doctor's office – he asks his doctor: 'Can I keep it?'
What ethics for the IoT and Artificial Intelligence in the digital age?
The development of Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies raises the issue on whether they should also act ethically. On 26 October 2016, I attended the IoT Solutions World Congress, one of the largest events in the world on the Internet of Things, and I had the pleasure of being part of a panel on "Ethical Uses of Data", together with Edy Liongosari from Accenture, Prith Banerjee from Schneider Electric, Derek O'Halloran from the World Economic Forum, Sven Schrecker from Intel and David Blaszkowsky from the Financial Semantics Collaborative. In a few years, we will not own almost anything. Our car, our house and whatever we use during the course of the day will become "as a service". In this context, the sole asset that will belong to individuals is their "digital identity".
Should artificial intelligence have freedom of choice?
Artificial intelligence systems are starting to think "like humans" rather than just calculating potential options, but might their full exploitation trigger some liability risks? As anticipated, IoTItaly, the Italian Association on the Internet of Things of which I am one of the founders, ran an event in collaboration with STMicroelectronics named "Creativity and technology at the time of Industry 4.0" on 30 May 2017. I found fascinating the video below that tries to explain Google's DeepMind system. As mentioned in the video, the "symbolic" event which is considered the moment when machines started to be "intuitive" is the victory of the AlphaGo artificial intelligence system against a master of the ancient Chinese game Go. DeepMind is the evolution of such approach.
Artificial intelligence shall be unleashed or regulated in Europe?
Artificial intelligence is a massive opportunity, but triggers some risks which cannot be sorted through over-regulations that might damage the market. One of the main topics of the World Economic Forum 2017 was artificial intelligence (AI). I found extremely interesting the interview to Ginni Rometty, the Chairwoman, President and CEO of IBM. Because of these 3 revolutions, there is a huge amount of information that cannot be dealt by humans, but we need systems that can deal with such data, reason around it and learn. This led to the rise of artificial intelligence.

How artificial intelligence is changing the world around us
Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to be a revolution on how we interact with the world around us as part of a connected environment. As part of the series of guest posts named Thoughts Leaders' Corner, here is a very interesting article from Aric Dromi, Chief Futurologist at Volvo Car Group and cofounder of TEMPUS.MOTU. I hope you will enjoy it and if you are interested to the legal issues of the Internet of Things that are part of this digital revolution, check my blog post here! We are living in an experience based interaction simulation. A place that is governed by transparent intelligence technologies.
