Eight things we learned from the Elon Musk biography

The Guardian

A new biography of Elon Musk was published on Tuesday and contains colourful details of the life of the world's richest man. Musk afforded widespread access to his biographer, Walter Isaacson, the author of the bestselling biography of the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, and the book contains a series of illuminating anecdotes about Musk. Here are eight things we learned from the book. Musk, 52, was born and raised in South Africa and endured a fraught relationship with his father, Errol, an engineer. Isaacson writes that Errol " bedevils Elon".

Donald Trump rap song 'First Day Out' that uses AI-generated voice to sing about avoiding jail hits No. 2 on iTunes chart

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A faux-rap song that features the AI-generated voice of Donald Trump defending himself against the criminal indictment out of Georgia has jumped to the No. 2 spot on the iTunes rap chart. Hi-Rez the Rapper, who describes himself as a radical freedom extremist, released the song on August 25, one day after Trump posted his August 24th mugshot to X (formerly Twitter). The song has been viewed nearly 3million times on X, and has shot to the top of the Hip-Hop charts since its release. The digital imitation of the former president's voice is nearly identical to the real-life 2024 candidate's. In the song, Hi-Rez imagines how Trump responded to being booked and released on bond on charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.

Hunter Biden's lawyers demand criminal probe into laptop leakers, Giuliani and others, admit laptop is his

FOX News

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer told reporters Tuesday he believes Hunter Biden was "in proximity" to the classified documents found in President Biden's garage. Hunter Biden's lawyers called on federal and state prosecutors across the country to open criminal investigations into his critics on Wednesday – and in doing so, acknowledged that the notorious laptop is indeed Hunter's. Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, wrote letters to the Justice Department and the Delaware attorney general calling for investigations into Rudy Giuliani, Steve Bannon and John Mac Isaac, who owns the computer repair shop where Biden is said to have left his laptop. Biden's lawyers also sent cease and desist letters to others who obtained and disseminated the laptop's contents. Lowell argued in the letters that Mac Isaac and the others had no right to inspect the contents of Biden's laptop, much less make copies of it to share with the media.

Red-state Dems worried Trump impeachment will hurt Senate chances; Giuliani considering lawsuits

FOX News

Here's what you need to know as you start your day ... Red-state Dems worried Trump impeachment push will kill hopes of retaking Senate in 2020 Some red-state Senate Democrats are fretting that the ongoing House impeachment inquiry could expand uncontrollably and become a "kitchen sink" of complaints about President Trump and hurt chances of regaining the Senate majority in 2020, Fox News has learned. Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana specifically expressed concerns and have told Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that leadership cannot allow liberal Democrats to push for the inquiry to include allegations about Trump illegally using his office to enrich himself or relitigate findings from former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian election meddling in 2016. In other developments: Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday he's considering individual lawsuits against House Democrats for allegedly violating the constitutional and civil rights of the president and members of his administration amid new congressional inquiries and subpoenas resulting from a whistleblower's complaint. Eliot Engel, Adam Schiff and Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chairmen of three House committees, informed the State Department in a letter late Tuesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appears to have a "conflict of interest" and might now be a "fact witness" in their ongoing impeachment inquiry, after Pompeo accused Dems of trying to "bully" foreign service officers into testifying. Eric Holder says Barr is'paying a price' by spearheading a probe of the Russia investigation Former Attorney General Eric Holder told Fox News on Tuesday that current Attorney General William Barr "is paying a price" and sacrificing his credibility by spearheading U.S. Attorney John Durham's ongoing probe into possible misconduct by the intelligence community at the outset of the Russia investigation.

The Latest: Giuliani: Trump Didn't Know About Poll-Rigging

U.S. News

Technology company owner John Gauger told The Wall Street Journal that Cohen promised him $50,000 for work including using computers to enter fake votes for Trump in a 2014 CNBC poll asking people to identify top business leaders and a 2015 poll of potential presidential candidates. Gauger says Cohen paid him about a quarter of the money in cash, then stiffed him on the rest.

Trump aide Rudy Giuliani lashes out at Twitter as he tries to blame site for his own embarrassing mistake

The Independent - Tech

Rudy Giuliani, one of Donald Trump's closest aides, has posted a bizarre and angry tweet after falling victim to a prank. Mr Giuliani, who served as the president's lawyer and also his cybersecurity advisor, suggested that Twitter had pulled a trick on him because they dislike Mr Trump. But nothing of the sort happened, and Mr Giuliani actually appears to have tricked himself. Now he appears to be spreading conspiracy theories about Twitter in an attempt to deflect from that mistake. Uber has halted testing of driverless vehicles after a woman was killed by one of their cars in Tempe, Arizona.

The Need for Speed of AI Applications: Performance Comparison of Native vs. Browser-based Algorithm Implementations

arXiv.org Machine Learning

AI applications pose increasing demands on performance, so it is not surprising that the era of client-side distributed software is becoming important. On top of many AI applications already using mobile hardware, and even browsers for computationally demanding AI applications, we are already witnessing the emergence of client-side (federated) machine learning algorithms, driven by the interests of large corporations and startups alike. Apart from mathematical and algorithmic concerns, this trend especially demands new levels of computational efficiency from client environments. Consequently, this paper deals with the question of state-of-the-art performance by presenting a comparison study between native code and different browser-based implementations: JavaScript, ASM.js as well as WebAssembly on a representative mix of algorithms. Our results show that current efforts in runtime optimization push the boundaries well towards (and even beyond) native binary performance. We analyze the results obtained and speculate on the reasons behind some surprises, rounding the paper off by outlining future possibilities as well as some of our own research efforts.

Cryogenics, Robot Dinos, and Other Visions of the Future

WIRED

In the future, people will clone their dogs, stay at hotels staffed by robot dinosaurs, and eat bugs for dinner. Alberto Giuliani knows this, because he's seen it. The Italian photographer spent 15 months traveling the world documenting glimpses of the future for his series Surviving Humanity. The trip took him to eight countries, where he saw researchers attempting to bring back the wooly mammoth, atmospheric scientists firing lasers into clouds, and a big bubble that simulates life on Mars. "Reading news every day about climate change, migrants, wars, I understand that the future is not so clear," says Giuliani.
