Gigaom AI Minute – March 25
At Gigaom.com/quiz, there is a ten question test that scores how likely any given job is to be replaced by automation, be it by a computer or a robot. I'm going to spend ten AI Minutes going through the questions one at a time, and why they're on the test. Question #4: How long is the training for the job? You might score this as 0, which is less likely to be automated, if the training is months or years; that might be a dental hygienist, or an auto mechanic, or a locksmith. On the other hand, you might score this a ten, which is more likely to be automated, for something like a job that requires just a very minimal amount of training, like a custodian.
Gigaom How Machines Learn: The Top Four Approaches to ML in Business
Supervised learning outputs typically have one of two forms. Regression outputs are real-valued numbers that exist in a continuous space. For instance, many of Vidora's eCommerce customers want to forecast how much money each customer is likely to spend, so that high-value customer may be targeted with personalized promotional offers. A simple linear regression structures this problem through the familiar formula y mx b, where y is predicted expenditure and x is some attribute of each customer -- say, number of site visits. During training, we supply labeled input-output pairs -- i.e. customers for which transaction history is already known -- and the algorithm finds the optimal parameters m and b to make this relationship as accurate as possible.

Gigaom The Analytics of Language, Behavior, and Personality
Computational linguists and computer scientists, among them University of Texas professor Jason Baldridge, have been working for over fifty years toward algorithmic understanding of human language. They are, however, doing a pretty good job with important tasks such as entity recognition, relation extraction, topic modeling, and summarization. These tasks are accomplished via natural language processing (NLP) technologies, implementing linguistic, statistical, and machine learning methods. Voice response and personal assistants -- Siri, Google Now, Microsoft Cortana, Amazon Alexa -- rely on NLP to interpret requests and formulate appropriate responses. Search and recommendation engines apply NLP, as do applications ranging from pharmaceutical drug discovery to national security counter-terrorism systems.
