The AI Birthday Letter That Blew Me Away

In May, I asked Google's chatbot, Gemini, to write a birthday letter to my best friend. Within seconds, it spat out the most impressive piece of AI writing I have ever encountered. Instead of reading as soulless, machine-generated text, the letter felt unnervingly like something I might've actually written. "You're probably rolling your eyes," the letter read, after a sentence that my friend would most definitely have rolled his eyes at. All I had typed into the chatbot was a nine-word prompt containing my friend's first name and the age he was turning.

Ben, you are somebody who I know is fully in the Mac ecosystem, and I also know you're very conscientious. Well, unfortunately, or for what you do, you're kind of there, but you're also very conscientious about how you upgrade, right? How did you feel about all these new Macs? Because we have the M4 iMac, we have an adorable new Mac mini, which is tiny, absolutely tiny, and M4 chips on the MacBook Pros. Is anything particularly compelling to you? Ben: So as I was reading up on the Mac, All of the stuff they released this week. That chip is four years old now. Ben: cut me like a knife. But that is M1 Classic, not M1 Pro. My research says that the M1 Pro is only two times slower than this new M4 Pro. Please fact check me on this. Send us an email at podcast adding gadget. If I didn't get that right. Devindra: I mean, you, you bring up a good point though, Ben, be sure to be very clear about what Apple is comparing its devices to, right? Because they often go back to base M1, which. Was released at the end of 2020 2020. It took a full year before we got the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, right. Before they really expanded the line. Ben: you mean M1 Pro and M1 Max. So remember that there was that time difference when they, they just dropped the M1 on us and that was on the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13 inch, which was a fricking waste of time and the Mac mini, I believe back then, right.


The US Just Escalated Its AI Chip War With China

A year ago, the US government introduced chip sanctions aimed at hobbling China's ability to develop advanced artificial intelligence. But those sanctions had loopholes that allowed Chinese firms to keep buying and building chips used to train some of the world's most advanced AI algorithms. Today, the US announced it is tightening controls to try to close those gaps. The new restrictions, announced by the Commerce Department, also impose new rules for reporting the sales of other types of advanced chips, new controls on sales of advanced chipmaking equipment and design software, and statutes to prevent Chinese companies from obtaining chips through foreign subsidiaries. "This is a doubling down by the Biden administration on the goals of last year's export controls," says Gregory Allen, who is director of a center for advanced studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and supports the restrictions.

As a data scientist or machine learning engineer, you spend much of your time improving a model's performance by creating new features, comparing different types of models, trying out new model architectures, and much more. In the end, it's the score on the test set that counts, so that is what you focus on when deciding on a model. However, as important as the model performance may be, there are other, secondary criteria you shouldn't forget about. What do you get from a model with almost perfect scores, if your MLOps department can't host it? How does the user feel, if the prediction is accurate, but it takes ages to get it?

Nvidia Offers Alternative Chip for China to Clear U.S. Export Hurdles

HONG KONG--Nvidia Corp. has begun offering an alternative to a high-end chip hit with U.S. export restrictions to customers in China, after the new rules threatened to cost the American company hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue. Nvidia said the new graphics-processing chip, branded the A800, meets U.S. restrictions on chips that can be exported to China under new rules rolled out last month. The chip went into production in the third quarter, the company said. The A800 replaces the A100, a chip widely used in servers and artificial-intelligence applications by China's tech giants including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Baidu Inc. According to a memo Nvidia sent to its channel distributors last Thursday, the A800 has the same computational performance but a narrower interconnect bandwidth, the capacity of a chip to send and receive data from other chips, crucial for training large-scale AI models or building supercomputers.


Stability AI is the New OpenAI

Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, is trying to democratise AI and use its potential to'awaken humanity's potential'. However, if you have closely followed the AI ecosystem over the past few years, this might give you a sense of déjà vu. In 2015, Sam Altman and Elon Musk announced the formation of OpenAI, a non-profit company with similar motives – to democratise AI and open its research and models to the public. However, DALL-E2, by OpenAI, is not open-source; the company charges its users. Hence, with Stability AI in the picture, it made many of us wonder if Stability AI will toe the OpenAI line.

But UNSW expert, Dr. Shaghik Atakaramians, says progress is vital as people and businesses become ever more dependent on fast and reliable transfer of data. "In the next 10 years, we can expect massive changes and new technologies coming into our lives which will require more and more connectivity at higher speeds as we transfer more and more data," says the Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications. "We can imagine completely autonomous systems; or multi-sensory extended reality which integrates the five traditional human senses with the digital world; or real-time remote telesurgery; or complete virtual shopping malls. "These sound like something out of science fiction, but they are potentially possible with 6G technology whereas they could not be feasible using current 5G standards.
