Japanese researchers discover 248 Nazca Line geoglyphs in Peru
A team of researchers at Yamagata University announced on Monday the discovery of 248 new Nazca Line geoglyphs in Peru. The geoglyphs, which include drawings of humans, birds and llamas, were drawn along footpaths used by people in ancient times, with each path depicting a different theme, the research team said. In cooperation with IBM, the team identified the geoglyphs through field surveys conducted from 2023 to 2024 on sites selected from aerial photographs using artificial intelligence technology. While one path features continuous images of priests holding human heads, or heads alone, another shows multiple depictions of llamas. The research team, which began work on the World Heritage drawings in 2004, has now identified a total of 893 geoglyphs.

Yamagata University unearths 303 Nazca Lines in Peru
Yamagata University said Tuesday it has newly identified 303 Nazca Lines geoglyphs in southern Peru. The national university, which has a research institute focused on the World Heritage drawings, added that the Nazca Lines are highly likely to have been created for the purposes of rituals and information sharing. The findings were published in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the same day. Yamagata University identified the geoglyphs using artificial intelligence technology in cooperation with IBM Research of the United States. Researchers found the drawings through field surveys conducted from September 2022 and February 2023 of sites selected with the AI technology from aerial photographs.

The mysterious Nazca glyphs may date back to 400 BC, but scientists are still unsure what their exact purpose was, if any.

AI discovers hundreds of ancient Nazca drawings in Peruvian desert
Hundreds of ancient drawings depicting decapitated human heads and domesticated llamas have been discovered in the Peruvian desert with the help of artificial intelligence. Archaeologists have previously linked these creations to the people of the Nazca culture, who started etching such images, called geoglyphs, into the ground around 2000 years ago. These geoglyphs are smaller and older than the Nazca lines and other figures found to date, which portray huge geometric shapes stretching several kilometres or wild animals about 90 metres long on average. The newly discovered images typically depict humanoid figures and domesticated animals around 9 metres long. Some even hint at human sacrifice, portraying decapitated heads and killer whales armed with blades.

Preservation of the Nasca geoglyphs at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Peru is urgent as natural and human impact accelerates. More frequent weather extremes such as flashfloods threaten Nasca artifacts. We demonstrate that runoff models based on (sub-)meter scale, LiDAR-derived digital elevation data can highlight AI-detected geoglyphs that are in danger of erosion. We recommend measures of mitigation to protect the famous "lizard", "tree", and "hand" geoglyphs located close by, or even cut by the Pan-American Highway.

A mysterious unknown language, 'Linear A' discovered on tablets in Crete in 1900 has never been deciphered - but AI might be able to crack the code. Among the world's most famous examples of unknown languages, stones and tablets written in the strange'LInear A' language is considered the main script used by the Minoan civilization, a Bronze Age kingdom led by King Minos.

Geoglyphs are often massive, with previously discovered Nazca Lines reaching up to 1,200 feet long, which makes them virtually impossible to detect when on the ground.

More than 160 mysterious Nazca geoglyphs are discovered in Peru
Researchers have discovered another 168 geoglyphs made in the soil of Peru's Nazca Desert, known as the Nazca lines. The newly-discovered drawings – identified by a team at Yamagata University in Japan – depict humans, camelids, birds, killer whales, felines and snakes. One of the human drawings looks like Homer Simpson, with big cartoon eyes and a patch of what looks like stubble around the mouth. These 168 newly-found geoglyphs are thought to date between 100 BC and AD 300, according to experts, but other Nazca lines may go back even further to 400 BC. The Nazca lines are a group of geoglyphs made in the soil of the Nazca Desert in southern Peru.

A research group at Yamagata University identified 143 new geoglyphs etched into the desert terrains of Nazca in southern Peru. The giant land art pieces, known as the Nazca Lines, depict human-like figures and a variety of animals including birds, fish, snakes, foxes, felines, and camelids. Many can only be identified from the air due to their large size.
