Space Invaders on your wrist: the glory years of Casio video game watches

The Guardian

Over the last couple of weeks I have been tidying our attic, and while the general aim has been to prevent its contents from collapsing through the ceiling, I have a side-mission. My most valued possession when I was twelve was a Casio GD-8 Car Race watch – a digital timepiece that included a built-in racing game on its tiny monochrome LCD display. Two big buttons on the front let you steer left and right to avoid incoming vehicles and your aim was to stay alive as long as possible. I lost count of the number of times it was confiscated by teachers at my school. I used to lend it to the hardest boys in the year, thereby guaranteeing me protection against bullies.

Nintendo's Zelda-themed Game & Watch is a love letter to Link's 8-bit origins

Engadget

For the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. last year, Nintendo released a special edition Game & Watch. Rather than featuring a single title, the Super Mario anniversary device had a full version of the original adventure as well as its Japan-only sequel, known in the West as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Nintendo's pulling the same trick this year with a 35th-anniversary Legend of Zelda-themed Game & Watch that just went on sale. And like last year's model, it includes a color screen and full games, but the selection is more generous. It includes the original The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, both originally released on the NES.

Oh, franchise supervisor Eiji Aonuma also showed off clips from a "Breath of the Wild" sequel. "Metroid Dread" was the biggest piece of news coming from the showcase -- While everyone was predicting a "Mario Kart 9" or "Pikmin 4," few were expecting a return of the the classic "Metroid" 2D gameplay.

Nintendo reboots classic Super Mario Bros. games for 35th anniversary

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Nintendo is marking 35 years since the original release of the Super Mario Bros. video game in Japan with new updated versions, playable on the Switch console. Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a special games bundle marking the anniversary containing updates of three classic games – 1996's Super Mario 64, 2002's Super Mario Sunshine and 2007's Super Mario Galaxy. The classic 1996 game, adored by a generation of children in the late 1990s, sees players running around an open-world trying to collect stars during various missions, while the other two games put the gameplay on a tropical island and far-off planets. As part of the new package, all three games feature updated HD graphics, controls adapted to the Switch's Joy-Con and an in-game music-player mode to play the original music. Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which is retailing for £49.99 and is available to pre-order now, launches for the Nintendo Switch on September 18 as both a download and physical cartridge.

Nintendo consoles

BBC News

From the Game Boy to the Wii, Nintendo has created some of the world's most memorable games consoles. Some were big hits, but others have been big misses. Ahead of the release of its next games machine, the Nintendo Switch, these are the main devices that have brought players the likes of Super Mario, Tetris, Zelda and Pokemon. The Game & Watch was Nintendo's first breakout video game success. Its inspiration came when developer Gunpei Yokoi saw a bored businessman punch buttons on a calculator to amuse himself on a train, says Katharine Byrne, news editor at video games publication MCV.
