From our humble beginnings as hunter gatherers, it took us thousands of years to create words with enough meaning to define the discrete schools of thought that make up primary sectors within society. Economics, law, medicine, philosophy and physics, to name a few. In the time since inventing these fields, we are in the middle of the next radical shift in the way we operate -- the main-streaming of interdisciplinary thinking and processes. In the past, innovations have been discrete and specific to an individual industry or application. For example, in the 20th century we invented electric power tools to replace manual tools.

But the impact on jobs has not yet arrived in most organizations. As recently as 2017, headlines such as "Bosses Believe Your Work Skills Will Soon Be Useless" (from the The Washington Post) were common. Oxford University researchers argued in 2013 that 47% of U.S. jobs were at risk of loss to automation. MIT launched its institute-wide task force on the future of work in 2018. Leaders around the world began to consider how their organizations would be different when thousands of their employees' jobs are automated away.

In the book Humans Machines – Reinventing work in the age of AI: Daugherty and Wilson (2018) propose a model for humans and AI working together based on the idea of identifying the'missing middle'. The authors identify subcategories in these models that I briefly explain below. The authors call for process re-engineering to rethink business processes implemented as a hybrid human-machine model. Now, based on this, can we think of personality traits in humans that could be suitable for jobs based on the above?

The desire for data-science and machine learning (ML) skills will continue strongly into next year, according to developers surveyed by analyst firm SlashData. SlashData queried some 20,500 respondents from 167 countries, which means this is a pretty comprehensive survey from a global perspective. Responses were additionally weighted in order to "derive a representative distribution for platforms, segments, and types of IoT [projects]," according to the report accompanying the data. The section on Future Jobs also finds that more than 52 percent candidates consider Agricultural Technologies followed by 25 percent consider Healthcare technologies to be the focus for companies for technology adoption where Transport and Military Technologies were considered 12 and 11 percent respectively where future jobs will arrive. Recently All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has revised the curriculum for the four year undergraduate program. Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Internet of things are mandatory induction program from academic year 2018-19 to prepare future engineers more employable.

According to an Oxford University analysis, close to half of all jobs will be taken over by robots in the next 25 years. No wonder the press is full of hand-wringing about how workers will adjust and the best way to prepare the next generation for this A.I.-filled future. But not everyone is alarmed about the prospect of radical change in the labor market. After all, this has happened before (for instance, when mechanization replaced the vast majority of farmers) and it turned out OK. Plus, a lot of today's jobs are soul-crushingly boring and repetitive. Losing them might just be a blessing.
