Trump admin tackles urgent electrical grid crisis as AI set to double demand

FOX News

Fox News anchor Bret Baier examines the U.S. power supply on'Special Report.' Over the next two decades, global electricity demand is expected to double, growth we haven't seen since post-World War II. To meet historic projections, we need to generate abundant, reliable and affordable energy at a massive scale. But new generation won't be enough. We must dramatically modernize the country's electrical grid infrastructure, the invisible backbone of our entire energy system.

FOX News

Dr. Mehmet Oz, nominated by President-elect Trump to be the next CMS administrator, will have his hands full when he takes the reins of our agency that provides health insurance for over 140 million Americans and accounts for one quarter of the nation's budget. Through bold and principled leadership and effective communication, he holds the potential to make a positive, lasting difference. It's no secret our health care system is broken. We continue to spend more and more money without any clear return on investment when it comes to our nation's health and well-being. In fact, nearly 50% of Americans live with one chronic health condition, such as diabetes, hypertension, or obesity.

TuPAW Shakur! Meet the LA hip-hop producer who makes tunes for cats, dogs and even hamsters and has become the first pet-only musician to get a multi-million-dollar record deal

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A billion streams puts you in the same league as musicians including Drake, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. But one producer has hit this milestone by focusing on four-legged, furry listeners instead of human beings. Speaking from Los Angeles, Amman Ahmed tells DailyMail.com he pioneered the idea of music for pets via a YouTube channel, playing songs and listening to dog owner feedback until he created music which genuinely relaxed the animals. He tapped into a post-pandemic trend when separation anxiety among pets got worse when animals got used to spending so much time with their working-from-home owners. The pioneering dog musician now offers dozens of playlists to relax cats and dogs, and says that his'creative process' is driven by his four-legged listeners themselves.

Who's Thinking? A Push for Human-Centered Evaluation of LLMs using the XAI Playbook

Datta, Teresa, Dickerson, John P.

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Deployed artificial intelligence (AI) often impacts humans, and there is no one-size-fits-all metric to evaluate these tools. Human-centered evaluation of AI-based systems combines quantitative and qualitative analysis and human input. It has been explored to some depth in the explainable AI (XAI) and human-computer interaction (HCI) communities. Gaps remain, but the basic understanding that humans interact with AI and accompanying explanations, and that humans' needs -- complete with their cognitive biases and quirks -- should be held front and center, is accepted by the community. In this paper, we draw parallels between the relatively mature field of XAI and the rapidly evolving research boom around large language models (LLMs). Accepted evaluative metrics for LLMs are not human-centered. We argue that many of the same paths tread by the XAI community over the past decade will be retread when discussing LLMs. Specifically, we argue that humans' tendencies -- again, complete with their cognitive biases and quirks -- should rest front and center when evaluating deployed LLMs. We outline three developed focus areas of human-centered evaluation of XAI: mental models, use case utility, and cognitive engagement, and we highlight the importance of exploring each of these concepts for LLMs. Our goal is to jumpstart human-centered LLM evaluation.

Microsoft Windows 11 update puts AI front and center

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft will roll out on Tuesday an update to Windows 11 that puts its new AI-powered Bing capabilities front and center on its taskbar, one of the operating system's most widely used features, in the latest sign the company is doubling down on the buzzy technology despite some recent controversy. With the update, the AI tool will be accessible from the Windows search box, which allows users to directly access files, settings and perform web queries. The search bar has more than half a billion users every month, according to the company, making it prime real estate for eventually exposing more users to the new feature. Earlier this month, Microsoft said it was looking for ways to rein in Bing's AI chatbot after users highlighted responses that ranged from inaccurate to emotionally reactive. Despite such early hiccups, the company told CNN "as a whole, we are feeling very good about the product experience for people" and continues to learn from feedback. "AI itself is reinventing right now … and it's just the beginning," Panos Panay, Microsoft's chief product officer, told CNN ahead of Tuesday's launch.

The Art Behind Supply Chains Is Front and Center at a Museum Exhibit

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

"It gives you a greater appreciation for everything that we use, how difficult it is to actually use that item fully and appreciate it," said Sam Lai, a physician from Orange County, Calif., after examining the 13-foot-by-13-⅓-foot "Anatomy of an AI System" on a recent visit to MoMA with his wife. Top news and in-depth analysis on the world of logistics, from supply chain to transport and technology. "We have three kids," Dr. Lai said. "It would be cool to be able to show them a picture like this when they're older and try to impress upon them exactly how significant our impact on the world is and how appreciative we should be of the things that we have." MoMA curators thought the piece by Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler would grab visitors, so they built a larger exhibit called Systems around the work, essentially treating the deep operations behind supply chains as art.

Women in AI: Front and center at Transform on July 19

#artificialintelligence

We are excited to bring Transform 2022 back in-person July 19 and virtually July 20 - 28. Join AI and data leaders for insightful talks and exciting networking opportunities. When I joined VentureBeat three months ago, it came as no surprise to discover that a stubborn gender gap remains among AI professionals and researchers. Frustrating, to be sure, especially when the demand for AI talent is so high. The statistics say it all: A 2020 World Economic Forum report found that women make up only 26% of data and AI positions in the workforce. According to the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI's 2021 AI Index Report, women make up just 16% of tenure track faculty focused on AI globally.

Snapchat's Scan feature can identify dogs, plants, clothes, and more

#artificialintelligence

Snapchat's camera has to date mostly been associated with sending disappearing messages and goofy AR effects, like a virtual dancing hot dog. But what if it did things for you, like suggest ways to make your videos look and sound better? Or show you a similar shirt based on the one you're looking at? Starting Thursday, a feature called Scan is being upgraded and placed front and center in the app's camera, letting it identify a range of things in the real world, like clothes or dog breeds. Scan's prominent placement in Snapchat means that the company is slowly becoming not just a messaging app, but a visual search engine.

They say necessity is the mother of invention -- and the last year is Exhibit A. Amid the turbulence of the pandemic, we've seen impressive innovation across the board -- from the rise of grocery store robots to artificial intelligence-powered contact centers. But perhaps nowhere has this innovation been more pronounced than in the healthcare industry. Faced with unparalleled strain, medical facilities forged a new way of operating -- and artificial intelligence (AI) was front and center. From AI-powered thermal scanners to disinfection robots and autonomous PPE deliveries, AI played a central role in supporting medical staff, maintaining a sanitary environment and supporting efforts to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
