Micron Megafab Project Faces a New Hurdle as Activists Seek a Benefits Deal
Activists are demanding a way to hold the memory-chip maker accountable to its promises to protect the environment and embrace communities of color in central New York. Days after Micron broke ground on a $100 billion chip factory in New York state, a coalition of environmentalists, labor unions, and civil rights groups are urging the US tech giant to sign a deal that would make a series of promises to be a good neighbor legally enforceable. Micron's megafab to make memory chips is on track to become the biggest commercial development in state history and the largest chipmaking complex in the country . Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony in the city of Clay, near Syracuse, last Friday. The first chips could arrive in five years, though the entire site won't be finished for 20 years.

Plastic-free soy sauce container biodegrades in 4 weeks
The biodegradable design could help keep plastic from becoming fish food. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Chances are sushi aficionados have left a restaurant take-out in tow and with a handful of adorable, but environmentally problematic, fish-shaped soy sauce packets. These single-use plastic " shoyu-tai " drip bottles are as iconic as they are convenient, but their small size and disposability mean they often end up sliding down sinks and into drains. Once in the big blue, they slowly break down into microplastics that are then eaten by fish .

You're Thinking About AI and Water All Wrong
Fears about AI data centers' water use have exploded. Experts say the reality is far more complicated than people think. Last month, journalist Karen Hao posted a Twitter thread in which she acknowledged that there was a substantial error in her blockbuster book Empire of AI. Hao had written that a proposed Google data center in a town near Santiago, Chile, could require "more than one thousand times the amount of water consumed by the entire population"--a figure which, thanks to a unit misunderstanding, appears to have been off by a magnitude of 1,000. In the thread, Hao thanked Andy Masley, the head of an effective altruism organization in Washington, DC, for bringing the correction to her attention. Masley has spent the past several months questioning some of the numbers and rhetoric common in popular media about water use and AI on his Substack.

The Trump Administration's Data Center Push Could Open the Door for New Forever Chemicals
The Trump Administration's Data Center Push Could Open the Door for New Forever Chemicals The EPA is prioritizing review of new chemicals to be used in data centers. Experts say this could lead to the fast approval of new types of forever chemicals--with limited oversight. In recent months, the Trump administration has opened a deregulatory floodgate in the name of building more data centers. Among other things, this has involved ordering rollbacks of clean water regulations and opening up public lands to coal mining. Now, it's turning its eye to chemical regulation with a new policy that could, experts say, potentially fast-track the approval of new chemicals for use in the US--including new types of forever chemicals--with limited oversight. In September, the EPA announced it would be prioritizing the regulatory review of new chemicals used in data centers or related projects.

New recycling method turns Teflon into toothpaste fluoride
The approach converts the toxic nonstick coating into harmless ingredients. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. The common coating known as Teflon can keep food from sticking to cookware, but it's notoriously difficult to break down safely. Now, researchers in the United Kingdom have discovered a simple and cost-effective solution to the problem. The results aren't simply eco-friendly--they can also be upcycled into helpful toothpaste and drinking water additives.
