Facilitating the Emergence of Assistive Robots to Support Frailty: Psychosocial and Environmental Realities

While assistive robots have much potential to help older people with frailty-related needs, there are few in use. There is a gap between what is developed in laboratories and what would be viable in real-world contexts. Through a series of co-design workshops (61 participants across 7 sessions) including those with lived experience of frailty, their carers, and healthcare professionals, we gained a deeper understanding of everyday issues concerning the place of new technologies in their lives. A persona-based approach surfaced emotional, social, and psychological issues. Any assistive solution must be developed in the context of this complex interplay of psychosocial and environmental factors. Our findings, presented as design requirements in direct relation to frailty, can help promote design thinking that addresses people's needs in a more pragmatic way to move assistive robotics closer to real-world use.
LLM Robustness Leaderboard v1 --Technical report

This technical report accompanies the LLM robustness leaderboard published by PRISM Eval for the Paris AI Action Summit. We introduce PRISM Eval Behavior Elicitation Tool (BET), an AI system performing automated red-teaming through Dynamic Adversarial Optimization that achieves 100% Attack Success Rate (ASR) against 37 of 41 state-of-the-art LLMs. Beyond binary success metrics, we propose a fine-grained robustness metric estimating the average number of attempts required to elicit harmful behaviors, revealing that attack difficulty varies by over 300-fold across models despite universal vulnerability. We introduce primitive-level vulnerability analysis to identify which jailbreaking techniques are most effective for specific hazard categories. Our collaborative evaluation with trusted third parties from the AI Safety Network demonstrates practical pathways for distributed robustness assessment across the community.
Facilitating phenotyping from clinical texts: the medkit library

Phenotyping consists in applying algorithms to identify individuals associated with a specific, potentially complex, trait or condition, typically out of a collection of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Because a lot of the clinical information of EHRs are lying in texts, phenotyping from text takes an important role in studies that rely on the secondary use of EHRs. However, the heterogeneity and highly specialized aspect of both the content and form of clinical texts makes this task particularly tedious, and is the source of time and cost constraints in observational studies. To facilitate the development, evaluation and reproductibility of phenotyping pipelines, we developed an open-source Python library named medkit. It enables composing data processing pipelines made of easy-to-reuse software bricks, named medkit operations. In addition to the core of the library, we share the operations and pipelines we already developed and invite the phenotyping community for their reuse and enrichment. medkit is available at https://github.com/medkit-lib/medkit
BLIP: Facilitating the Exploration of Undesirable Consequences of Digital Technologies

Digital technologies have positively transformed society, but they have also led to undesirable consequences not anticipated at the time of design or development. We posit that insights into past undesirable consequences can help researchers and practitioners gain awareness and anticipate potential adverse effects. To test this assumption, we introduce BLIP, a system that extracts real-world undesirable consequences of technology from online articles, summarizes and categorizes them, and presents them in an interactive, web-based interface. In two user studies with 15 researchers in various computer science disciplines, we found that BLIP substantially increased the number and diversity of undesirable consequences they could list in comparison to relying on prior knowledge or searching online. Moreover, BLIP helped them identify undesirable consequences relevant to their ongoing projects, made them aware of undesirable consequences they "had never considered," and inspired them to reflect on their own experiences with technology.

The Cape Town International Convention Centre hosted Miss Pepper, a humanoid robot capable of detecting human emotions during the recent BIOMIN World Nutrition Forum 2018. Developed by SoftBank Robotics, "Miss Pepper" who is capable of interacting with humans and can adapt her interaction according to a human's emotions, was unveiled during the three-day international conference. According to SoftBank Robotics, the Pepper robot is the "first humanoid robot capable of recognising the principal human emotions and adapting his behaviour to the mood of his interlocutor". Herbert Kneissl, chief marketing officer at Erber AG, the parent company of Biomin, said robotics, artificial intelligence and big data will become an everyday topic in the livestock industry. "She (Miss Pepper) is able to perceive emotions, and what is a conference like the Biomin World Nutrition Forum without emotions? The digital experts of Biomin additionally trained her to be the little star on the stage - to welcome the audience, break the tensions, but in first line to demonstrate that the future of using humanoid robots has started now. "By using Miss Pepper we have the intention to create the image overflow from technological developments of other industries to biotechnology and animal nutrition, an overflow that develops already towards a merger, when we see the modern technologies like Farm 4.0, one of the big topics of this conference," said Kneissl. Miss Pepper is capable of recognising faces, speech, and can hear; she can also identify when someone is experiencing joy, sadness, is surprised and filled with anger. Facilitating the Human Connection Where it Matters Most
I recently returned from a trip to Japan to see first-hand the role robotics play in senior living communities. While robots are a growing topic throughout the North American seniors' industry, Japan's rapidly expanding elderly population and corresponding caregiver shortage has accelerated the technology. In her 2014 paper published by Brookings, "How Humans Respond to Robots: Building Public Policy through Good Design," Heather Knight discusses why she believes robotics will become an accepted part of daily life. Her premise is that people create the need for machines and guide the plans for development. She writes, "Partnering the capabilities of people with those of machines enables innovation, improved application performance and exploration beyond what either partner could do individually."
