Robotic Automation in Apparel Manufacturing: A Novel Approach to Fabric Handling and Sewing

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Sewing garments using robots has consistently posed a research challenge due to the inherent complexities in fabric manipulation. In this paper, we introduce an intelligent robotic automation system designed to address this issue. By employing a patented technique that temporarily stiffens garments, we eliminate the traditional necessity for fabric modeling. Our methodological approach is rooted in a meticulously designed three-stage pipeline: first, an accurate pose estimation of the cut fabric pieces; second, a procedure to temporarily join fabric pieces; and third, a closed-loop visual servoing technique for the sewing process. Demonstrating versatility across various fabric types, our approach has been successfully validated in practical settings, notably with cotton material at the Bluewater Defense production line and denim material at Levi's research facility. The techniques described in this paper integrate robotic mechanisms with traditional sewing machines, devising a real-time sewing algorithm, and providing hands-on validation through a collaborative robot setup.

Design and Experimental Study of Vacuum Suction Grabbing Technology to Grasp Fabric Piece

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The primary objective of this study was to design the grabbing technique used to determine the vacuum suction gripper and its design parameters for the pocket welting operation in apparel manufacturing. It presents the application of vacuum suction in grabbing technology, a technique that has revolutionized the handling and manipulation to grasp the various fabric materials in a range of garment industries. Vacuum suction, being non-intrusive and non-invasive, offers several advantages compared to traditional grabbing methods. It is particularly useful in scenarios where soft woven fabric and air-impermeable fabric items need to be handled with utmost care. The paper delves into the working principles of vacuum suction, its various components, and the underlying physics involved. Furthermore, it explores the various applications of vacuum suction in the garment industry into the automation exploration. The paper also highlights the challenges and limitations of vacuum suction technology and suggests potential areas for further research and development.

One Fling to Goal: Environment-aware Dynamics for Goal-conditioned Fabric Flinging

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Fabric manipulation dynamically is commonly seen in manufacturing and domestic settings. While dynamically manipulating a fabric piece to reach a target state is highly efficient, this task presents considerable challenges due to the varying properties of different fabrics, complex dynamics when interacting with environments, and meeting required goal conditions. To address these challenges, we present \textit{One Fling to Goal}, an algorithm capable of handling fabric pieces with diverse shapes and physical properties across various scenarios. Our method learns a graph-based dynamics model equipped with environmental awareness. With this dynamics model, we devise a real-time controller to enable high-speed fabric manipulation in one attempt, requiring less than 3 seconds to finish the goal-conditioned task. We experimentally validate our method on a goal-conditioned manipulation task in five diverse scenarios. Our method significantly improves this goal-conditioned task, achieving an average error of 13.2mm in complex scenarios. Our method can be seamlessly transferred to real-world robotic systems and generalized to unseen scenarios in a zero-shot manner.
