ExGAN: Adversarial Generation of Extreme Samples

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Mitigating the risk arising from extreme events is a fundamental goal with many applications, such as the modelling of natural disasters, financial crashes, epidemics, and many others. To manage this risk, a vital step is to be able to understand or generate a wide range of extreme scenarios. Existing approaches based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) excel at generating realistic samples, but seek to generate typical samples, rather than extreme samples. Hence, in this work, we propose ExGAN, a GAN-based approach to generate realistic and extreme samples. To model the extremes of the training distribution in a principled way, our work draws from Extreme Value Theory (EVT), a probabilistic approach for modelling the extreme tails of distributions. For practical utility, our framework allows the user to specify both the desired extremeness measure, as well as the desired extremeness probability they wish to sample at. Experiments on real US Precipitation data show that our method generates realistic samples, based on visual inspection and quantitative measures, in an efficient manner. Moreover, generating increasingly extreme examples using ExGAN can be done in constant time (with respect to the extremeness probability), as opposed to the exponential time required by the baseline approach.

Facebook's Machine Learning Model Manipulates Images to Open Closed Eyes!

#artificialintelligence

We've all taken not-so-great pictures and tried using various photo editing techniques to rehash them and make them presentable. With the advances in technology and hence software applications, most of these tasks are now a piece of cake. But there are still certain things like'closed eyes' in pictures which have eluded developers. How many times have you had to re-take pictures because someone invariably closed their eyes? Sure there are apps that attempt to make things better but so far, there hasn't been a convincing solution. Emphasis on "so far", because Facebook's AI research team has used machine learning to build a model that literally opens closed eyes in pictures.

Eye In-painting with Exemplar Generative Adversarial Networks (ExGANs)

@machinelearnbot

We introduce a novel approach to in-painting where the identity of the object to remove or change is preserved and accounted for at inference time: Exemplar GANs (ExGANs). ExGANs are a type of conditional GAN that utilize exemplar information to produce high-quality, personalized in-painting results. We propose using exemplar information in the form of a reference image of the region to in-paint, or a perceptual code describing that object. Unlike previous conditional GAN formulations, this extra information can be inserted at multiple points within the adversarial network, thus increasing its descriptive power. We show that ExGANs can produce photo-realistic personalized in-painting results that are both perceptually and semantically plausible by applying them to the task of closed-to-open eye in-painting in natural pictures.
