Exploring visual language models as a powerful tool in the diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma

Ewing's sarcoma (ES), characterized by a high density of small round blue cells without structural organization, presents a significant health concern, particularly among adolescents aged 10 to 19. Artificial intelligence-based systems for automated analysis of histopathological images are promising to contribute to an accurate diagnosis of ES. In this context, this study explores the feature extraction ability of different pre-training strategies for distinguishing ES from other soft tissue or bone sarcomas with similar morphology in digitized tissue microarrays for the first time, as far as we know. Vision-language supervision (VLS) is compared to fully-supervised ImageNet pre-training within a multiple instance learning paradigm. Our findings indicate a substantial improvement in diagnostic accuracy with the adaption of VLS using an in-domain dataset. Notably, these models not only enhance the accuracy of predicted classes but also drastically reduce the number of trainable parameters and computational costs.

Deepfake Porn Reveals a 'Pervert's Dilemma'
April 10 was a very bad day in the life of celebrity gamer and YouTuber Atrioc (Brandon Ewing). Ewing was broadcasting one of his usual Twitch livestreams when his browser window was accidentally exposed to his audience. During those few moments, viewers were suddenly face-to-face with what appeared to be deepfake porn videos featuring female YouTubers and gamers QTCinderella and Pokimane--colleagues and, to my understanding, Ewing's friends. Moments later, a quick-witted viewer uploaded a screenshot of the scene to Reddit, and thus the scandal was a fact. Deepfakes refer broadly to media doctored by AI, commonly to superimpose a person's face onto that of, say, an actor in a movie or video clip.

It's her face that has been pasted on to the porn performer's.

A popular creator with more than 800,000 followers on Twitch, she often streamed herself playing video games or baking. When her boyfriend told her what had happened, she was busy planning the second annual Streamer Awards, an event she launched in 2022. The deepfake was creepy, and it was definitely gross, but it was a stranger's body. "I didn't really understand what was in store for me," she says.

The development stage can be one of the most expensive and critical in the life sciences value chain, and is often bogged down in an oversight process that is highly manual and paper based. A clinical-stage study costs an average of $1.1 billion over 6.6 years, according to EY, and so any potential for increasing speed and efficiency in biopharmaceuticals development can have a dramatic impact on the bottom line. Luckily, we're now in the era of the smart connected lab, with robotic process automation (RPA) software deployed to transform the very nature of clinical development. James Ewing, UK regional director of Digital Workforce, says automation is changing pharmaceutical manufacturing in three key ways: streamlining operations through automating high-volume, low-value repetitive tasks, such as comparing datasets; helping researchers increase accuracy when dealing with large quantities of data; and cutting down the administrative tasks associated with regulation. "Given that biopharma research is a heavily regulated industry, there is a large amount of internal documentation which needs to be updated and submitted to external parties. This compliance paperwork process is time consuming, but can be easily automated using RPA," he says.

Until recently, Robyn Ewing was a writer in Hollywood, developing TV scripts and pitching pilots to film studios. Now she's applying her creative talents toward building the personality of a different type of character -- a virtual assistant, animated by artifical intelligence, that interacts with sick patients. Ewing works with engineers on the software program, called Sophie, which can be downloaded to a smartphone. The virtual nurse gently reminds users to check their medication, asks them how they are feeling or if they are in pain, and then sends the data to a real doctor. As tech behemoths and a wave of start-ups double down on virtual assistants that can chat with human beings, writing for AI is becoming a hot job in Silicon Valley.

I'd known about Warm Focus (the concept) from a series of playlists that Ewing made a few years ago, on the late and beloved streaming service Rdio. But Warm Focus (the radio show) was even better than those, because every so often Ewing would turn the music down, ask how the work was going, and remind you it was okay to take a walk. Not even Siri does that. I found this upbeat, elated song--which aurally falls somewhere between Steve Reich and I Am Robot and Proud--through Ewing's show, and he played it on his last episode. I think it's a good way to end the week or start the next one.
