How the evergreen shaped America

Popular Science

'They mirror our own impermanence: always in motion, always fading. Magical yet melancholy, the trees offer both a celebration and a gentle farewell, rolled into one.' Evergreen trees are full of symbolism. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Used with permission of Algonquin Books, a division of Hachette Book Group, Inc. Imagine for a moment if visitors from another planet observed humans buying, selling, and decorating billions of trees every year.

Large Language Models (LLMs) often hallucinate in question answering (QA) tasks. A key yet underexplored factor contributing to this is the temporality of questions -- whether they are evergreen (answers remain stable over time) or mutable (answers change). In this work, we introduce EverGreenQA, the first multilingual QA dataset with evergreen labels, supporting both evaluation and training. Using EverGreenQA, we benchmark 12 modern LLMs to assess whether they encode question temporality explicitly (via verbalized judgments) or implicitly (via uncertainty signals). We also train EG-E5, a lightweight multilingual classifier that achieves SoTA performance on this task. Finally, we demonstrate the practical utility of evergreen classification across three applications: improving self-knowledge estimation, filtering QA datasets, and explaining GPT-4o retrieval behavior.

Comedian Sarah Silverman warns 'comedy is not evergreen,' cringes at old jokes

FOX News

Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman explained that she'cringes' at some of her past jokes, suggesting that certain forms of humor are no longer as socially acceptable. Comedian Sarah Silverman said during an interview on CBC Radio One's "Q with Tom Power" that she cringes at some jokes from her past, but claimed it's a normal learning process as time goes on. Silverman has made a career out of using shock-value in her comedy, from saying, "I hope the Jews did kill Christ, I'd do it again" in a standup routine, to wearing blackface in a past comedy skit. In a recent interview she noted that many of her past jokes make her uncomfortable, but she thinks that comedians and America in general need to accept societal progress. "Gee, comedy is not evergreen," she said the interview.

Evergreen to install 15 new AMP Robotics sorting systems

#artificialintelligence

AMP Robotics has extended its partnership with Evergreen, a producer of food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET). Evergreen now has 15 of AMP's robotic sorting systems installed or planned across three facilities. In addition to six robots in Clyde, Evergreen has added six in Riverside, California, and will soon add three in Albany, New York. AMP's technology identifies and sorts green and clear PET from post-consumer bales of plastic soft drink bottles at speeds up to three times faster and at a higher accuracy than manual sorters can achieve. Evergreen then recycles the material into reusable flakes or pellets, which it sells to end markets as feedstock for new containers and packaging.

Kroger enlists artificial intelligence to cut down self-checkout errors

#artificialintelligence

The Kroger Co. plans to roll out Everseen's Visual AI technology chainwide to detect and reduce customer errors at self-checkout stations. Ireland-based Everseen said its artificial intelligence and machine learning platform began deployment in Kroger stores in March and is slated to be installed at 2,500 stores in the coming months. The Visual AI platform watches video in real time to recognize regular processes and "intelligently" step in whenever something is amiss, Evergreen explained. For Kroger shoppers, the technology flags errors occasionally experienced at self-checkout and enables customers to self-correct or, if they're unable to rectify the problem, an associate is summoned to help. For example, if a customer scanning groceries at the self-checkout kiosk has an item that doesn't scan properly, Evergreen's solution identifies the non-scan incident and alerts a store associate via a mobile device to intervene and rescan the item.
