Bronny James explains what fuels him throughout tumultuous rookie season: 'People think I'm a f---ing robot'
Paul Pierce explains how LeBron's absence has actually been good for the Lakers. Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Bronny James has been the center of debate from the moment he was drafted in June. The 20-year-old said he tries to filter it all out, but he sees it all. "My first thought about everything is I always try to just let it go through one ear and out the other, put my head down and come to work and be positive every day. I see everything that people are saying, and people think, like, I'm a f---ing robot, like I don't have any feelings or emotions," James said via The Athletic.

Quantifying Marketing Performance at Channel-Partner Level by Using Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) and Shapley Value Regression
Tang, Sean, Musunuru, Sriya, Zong, Baoshi, Thornton, Brooks
This paper explores the application of Shapley Value Regression in dissecting marketing performance at channel-partner level, complementing channel-level Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM). Utilizing real-world data from the financial services industry, we demonstrate the practicality of Shapley Value Regression in evaluating individual partner contributions. Although structured in-field testing along with cooperative game theory is most accurate, it can often be highly complex and expensive to conduct. Shapley Value Regression is thus a more feasible approach to disentangle the influence of each marketing partner within a marketing channel. We also propose a simple method to derive adjusted coefficients of Shapley Value Regression and compares it with alternative approaches.

College football fans upset EA Sports didn't release info about video game: 'You had one job'
College football fans were hyped at the start of the national championship on Monday night, but it was not only to watch Michigan defeat Washington to win its first title since 1997. ESPN: Memory-Efficient Multi-Vector Information Retrieval
Shrestha, Susav, Reddy, Narasimha, Li, Zongwang
Recent advances in large language models have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in information retrieval (IR) tasks. While many neural IR systems encode queries and documents into single-vector representations, multi-vector models elevate the retrieval quality by producing multi-vector representations and facilitating similarity searches at the granularity of individual tokens. However, these models significantly amplify memory and storage requirements for retrieval indices by an order of magnitude. This escalation in index size renders the scalability of multi-vector IR models progressively challenging due to their substantial memory demands. We introduce Embedding from Storage Pipelined Network (ESPN) where we offload the entire re-ranking embedding tables to SSDs and reduce the memory requirements by 5-16x. We design a software prefetcher with hit rates exceeding 90%, improving SSD based retrieval up to 6.4x, and demonstrate that we can maintain near memory levels of query latency even for large query batch sizes.

Michael Schumacher's family plans to sue German tabloid for AI-generated 'interview'
This week, a German tabloid tested the boundaries of AI passing itself off as reality. Celebrity magazine Die Aktuelle published a cover story in its April 15th issue about a supposed interview with Formula One driver Michael Schumacher; only at the end does it reveal that it was a hoax produced entirely by an AI chatbot. Schumacher's family told ESPN it plans to take legal action against the gossip rag. The article promised "the first interview" with Schumacher, who suffered a severe brain injury on a family ski trip in the French Alps in 2013. Since then, the celebrated driver -- arguably the greatest in Formula One history -- hasn't appeared publicly as his family guards his privacy.
Google Lays Off 100 Robot Workers Used To Clean Its Cafeterias - UrduPresss.Com
Villanova star freshman Cam Whitmore, a projected top-10 NBA draft pick, will undergo surgery next week on his right thumb after injuring it in practice on Wednesday, the school announced Friday. Whitmore will be reevaluated in early November. "We're disappointed for Cam," Villanova first-year coach Kyle Neptune said. "Throughout the preseason he's worked hard to learn our concepts and what it takes to be effective in the Big East. This is a temporary setback, though, and we know Cam will approach his rehab with a great attitude."
Major League Baseball wants to deploy strike zone robo-umpires in 2024
Major League Baseball will "likely" introduce an Automated Strike Zone System starting in 2024, commissioner Rob Manfred told ESPN. The so-called robot umpires may call all balls and strikes then relay the information to a plate umpire, or be part of a replay review system that allows managers to challenge calls. "We have an automated strike zone system that works," Manfred said. The comments come in the wake of fan outrage over umpire's missed calls in recent games, including a brutal low strike error during a Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins tilt. Give me robo umps already," tweeted Grand Rapids ABC sports director Jamal Spencer. MLB has been experimenting with robo umps in minor league Atlantic Triple-A league since 2019.
John McEnroe is playing tennis against a virtual version of himself on ESPN
Michelob Ultra and ESPN have decided to use AI to answer an enduring question: what would happen if tennis legend John McEnroe played against himself? An upcoming ESPN special entitled "McEnroe vs. McEnroe" will feature the 63-year-old star, who retired from singles competition in 1992, playing against a complicated, AI-trained version of himself. According to TechCrunch, the process for the actual game is fairly involved. After the real McEnroe sends a ball over the net, the AI avatar responds to its direction and "swings" -- at this point, a new ball is launched from a ball cannon, which is obscured by a smokescreen. The positioning of the ball cannon and smokescreen are designed to make the ball appear as if it's coming off the avatar's racket.
