How to Use the New AI Features in OmniFocus, the Power User's To-Do List

WIRED

How to Use the New AI Features in OmniFocus, the Power User's To-Do List One of the Mac's most popular productivity apps is incorporating generative artificial intelligence in a way that keeps it offline, private, and customizable. A lot of apps are adding artificial intelligence to their products in the most in-your-face manner possible. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and Meta are all adding colorful buttons and pop-ups to their user interface, and barraging their customers with marketing emails, all of which are loudly begging users to try out the new AI features. It was refreshing, in that context, to talk to indie app makers Omni Group about their approach to AI. The Seattle-based company makes OmniFocus, a powerful task management application long loved by reviewers and enthusiasts for its extreme flexibility.

StealthRank: LLM Ranking Manipulation via Stealthy Prompt Optimization

Tang, Yiming, Fan, Yi, Yu, Chenxiao, Yang, Tiankai, Zhao, Yue, Hu, Xiyang

arXiv.org Machine Learning

The integration of large language models (LLMs) into information retrieval systems introduces new attack surfaces, particularly for adversarial ranking manipulations. We present StealthRank, a novel adversarial ranking attack that manipulates LLM-driven product recommendation systems while maintaining textual fluency and stealth. Unlike existing methods that often introduce detectable anomalies, StealthRank employs an energy-based optimization framework combined with Langevin dynamics to generate StealthRank Prompts (SRPs)-adversarial text sequences embedded within product descriptions that subtly yet effectively influence LLM ranking mechanisms. We evaluate StealthRank across multiple LLMs, demonstrating its ability to covertly boost the ranking of target products while avoiding explicit manipulation traces that can be easily detected. Our results show that StealthRank consistently outperforms state-of-the-art adversarial ranking baselines in both effectiveness and stealth, highlighting critical vulnerabilities in LLM-driven recommendation systems.

The Bestselling Video Game of All Time Is Now a Surefire Hit Movie. You'll Need Some Background.

Slate

It was natural that the recent boom in video game adaptations would yield a new film based on the best-known virtual universe of the modern era. Minecraft, the Microsoft-owned digital sandbox that holds the record as the bestselling video game of all time, is finally taking its place in the annals of beloved gaming franchises--like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog--that have earned the Hollywood studio treatment, celebrity stars and special effects and all. Helmed by Napoleon Dynamite director and friend of Slate Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie throws Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Jennifer Coolidge into the titular game's pixelated universe, subjecting their real-life bodies to the simplistic physics, creative engineering, and bizarre supernatural life forms that make up the expansive worlds of Minecraft. It took about a decade to get this flick off the ground, so the anticipation is high--especially among younger gamers addicted to the online playgrounds that gained such traction during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Already, the film is breaking box-office records held by previous game adaptations, and if you have a child who spends a lot of time playing on the computer, chances are they're definitely ready and excited to catch A Minecraft Movie--even if you barely know what Minecraft is.

Nvidia's DLSS 4 is so much more than just 'fake frames'

PCWorld

This year at CES, Nvidia presented the next generation of its DLSS upscaling technology, which is trained with the help of artificial intelligence, alongside the new GeForce RTX 5090, 5080, and 5070 (Ti) graphics cards. The company touted its major advantages -- and now that RTX 5090 reviews are live, we can confirm that DLSS 4 indeed feels like black magic, supercharging frame rates and making games feel just as snappy as the beloved Doom 2016. That's because DLSS 4 now supports Multi Frame Generation (MFG), an AI-based multiple intermediate frame calculation that can artificially generate up to three images and insert them between two "real" frames, thus quadrupling the frame rate. Of course, this feature only works on new Blackwell-based RTX 50-series GPUs. But are the AI frames generated in this way a step forward or is it all hogwash?

Botto, the Millionaire AI Artist, Is Getting a Personality

WIRED

These images were created by an artist known as Botto, which exhibited at Sotheby's in New York this October and has made more than 4 million from sales of its work. In truth though, Botto needs only GPUs to get creative juices flowing. Botto is a decentralized semi-autonomous artistic agent created in 2021 by the German artist Mario Klingemann; Simon Hudson, a media entrepreneur; and Ziv Epstein, a computer scientist and designer. Botto contains an AI image generator similar to Dall-E or Midjourney but its output is also shaped by a "taste model" that selects the most pleasing images generated by a prompt. The taste model is tuned to reflect the preferences of a community of Botto enthusiasts who vote on the images Botto produces and posts online here.

Pushing Buttons: Horror game Crow Country lets you switch off the scary stuff – and that's fine with me

The Guardian

As I mentioned the other week, I've been playing through a PlayStation 1-style, low-poly horror game called Crow Country. They're too intense, and full of unpleasant surprises – I even played The Last of Us with a text walkthrough to tell me when the fungal zombies were going to appear. For last year's critical darling Alan Wake 2, I recruited my partner so I could hand over the controller whenever I felt like something was about to jump out at me. Like Alan Wake 2, a section of Crow Country is set in an abandoned theme park – a well-worn horror setting (Max Payne did it too, as did Left 4 Dead), but one that still reliably freaks me out. Unlike Alan Wake 2, I didn't need my partner to shield my eyes.

How to catch a Bigfoot

Engadget

In 1992, Matt Moneymaker had an experience that would change his life. Some local farmers had told him about a number of mysterious sightings deep in the forests of Ohio. Without the internet or social media, Moneymaker did what you did back then: He placed classified ads in the hope that these witnesses might come forward and share their story and, crucially, the location where it had happened. "I went to the area where they had seen one, and I found tracks. And we heard their sounds, and I was at that point very, very, very committed to getting some video footage of these things" he told Engadget.
