AI In Academia: Much Potential, Much Resistance
Colleges and universities have started using virtual assistants, chatbots, and other intelligent software tools to augment or replace student interactions with advisers or counselors and to provide some institutional services. Yet many faculty members still resist supporting AI, especially when it comes to delivering course content. I enlisted my colleague Nicole Engelbert, Oracle vice president of higher educational development, to help me assess and position the role of AI in academia. Radically Open: Tom Friedman on the Future of Work
Smart machines, businesses as platforms, and the gig economy figure into Tom Friedman's riff on where the future of work could take global companies. Tom Friedman is a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The New York Times and author of seven best-selling books. His work covers a broad range of topics, including globalization, the Middle East, and environmental challenges. Friedman is intrigued by the connections among people, businesses, technology, and institutions that shape the evolution of an increasingly complex world. His newest book, "Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations," explores the future of work, a topic also being examined by Deloitte U.S. and Deloitte LLP's Center for the Edge.
AI will rob companies of the best training tool they have: grunt work
Deloitte has what it calls an "apprenticeship model." The international auditing and professional services firm hires thousands of entry level employees with the expectation that most of them will work hard, then leave after they've learned marketable skills. The organization--like many companies--looks like a pyramid, with many more employees at the bottom level than at the middle or top level. That structure makes sense when there's a lot of grunt work to do. In the process of auditing a company, for instance, Deloitte employees used to pick up to 100 contracts to review manually.

Deloitte's CEO gave her 15-year-old son some great advice on job-stealing robots
You don't need to have a full-time job yet to be worried about robots taking it. The 15-year-old son of Cathy Engelbert, CEO of consulting firm Deloitte, is already thinking about automation. He asked his mom if robots were going to take his job someday, Engelbert wrote in a blog post on LinkedIn. "I told him: 'Don't worry--I've never met a machine with courage and empathy,'" Engelbert wrote. "We'll still need those in the new economy."
