The Download: how to talk to kids about AI, and China's emotional chatbots

MIT Technology Review

In the past year, kids, teachers, and parents have had a crash course in artificial intelligence, thanks to the wildly popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. In a knee-jerk reaction, some schools banned the technology--only to cancel the ban months later. Now that many adults have caught up with what ChatGPT is, schools have started exploring ways to use AI systems to teach kids important lessons on critical thinking. At the start of the new school year, here are MIT Technology Review's six essential tips for how to get started on giving your kid an AI education. My colleague Will Douglas Heaven wrote about how AI can be used in schools for our recent Education issue.

In-Depth Guide to B2B Chatbots: Use Cases & Examples

#artificialintelligence

B2B interaction is the situation where one business makes a commercial transaction with another business. The nature of such transactions is usually one business sourcing inputs from another. Companies take advantage of B2B chatbots to answer general questions, provide customer service support, mine data and nurture leads. In this article, we will explore what B2B chatbots are, how they can streamline B2B relationships, and showcase some use cases at the end. Chatbots are software applications used to conduct online conversations between users and bots, either through speech or text, instead of talking to a live agent. In line with that, a B2B chatbot is no different than a regular or emotional chatbot: Its ultimate goal is for the user to, through a conversation, get the information they are looking for.

Pros and Cons of Emotional Chat-bots

Chatbots are software programs designed to mimic a digitized conversation with a human being through text or speech. They are now used in smartphones, smart home appliances, healthcare, and customer support services. They can track your shipment, or play you a song on Spotify. But if you're expecting your Siri to be something more than a butler -- something with whom you can talk and receive sensible feedback in return -- then you're going to be disappointed. The good news is that there are emotional chat-bots that aim to humanize AI, provide a natural conversation, and act as your confidant.

Most Facebook Messenger users are by now familiar with "transactional bots" that can answer questions and place orders. But there's a new breed of chatbots on the block, and they could have a lasting effect on the relation between brands and consumers. Here are some emotional chatbot examples that illustrate this. After her close friend Roman Mazurenko died in a car accident, Eugenia Kuyda created a special digital monument for him. She compiled his messages and used AI to create a memorial bot that she and Roman's friends could chat with.

The Emotional Chatbots Are Here to Probe Our Feelings

When Eugenia Kuyda created her chatbot, Replika, she wanted it to stand out among the voice assistants and home robots that had begun to take root in peoples lives. Sure, AI made it possible to schedule an appointment or get the weather forecast by barking into your phone. But where was an AI you could simply talk to about your day? Siri and the rest were like your co-workers, all business. Replika would be like your best friend.
