Latent Adaptive Planner for Dynamic Manipulation

We present the Latent Adaptive Planner (LAP), a trajectory-level latent-variable policy for dynamic nonprehensile manipulation (e.g., box catching) that formulates planning as inference in a low-dimensional latent space and is learned effectively from human demonstration videos. During execution, LAP achieves real-time adaptation by maintaining a posterior over the latent plan and performing variational replanning as new observations arrive. To bridge the embodiment gap between humans and robots, we introduce a model-based proportional mapping that regenerates accurate kinematic-dynamic joint states and object positions from human demonstrations. Through challenging box catching experiments with varying object properties, LAP demonstrates superior success rates, trajectory smoothness, and energy efficiency by learning human-like compliant motions and adaptive behaviors. Overall, LAP enables dynamic manipulation with real-time adaptation and successfully transfer across heterogeneous robot platforms using the same human demonstration videos.


DA-MMP: Learning Coordinated and Accurate Throwing with Dynamics-Aware Motion Manifold Primitives

Dynamic manipulation is a key capability for advancing robot performance, enabling skills such as tossing. While recent learning-based approaches have pushed the field forward, most methods still rely on manually designed action parameterizations, limiting their ability to produce the highly coordinated motions required in complex tasks. Motion planning can generate feasible trajectories, but the dynamics gap-stemming from control inaccuracies, contact uncertainties, and aerodynamic effects-often causes large deviations between planned and executed trajectories. In this work, we propose Dynamics-Aware Motion Manifold Primitives (DA-MMP), a motion generation framework for goal-conditioned dynamic manipulation, and instantiate it on a challenging real-world ring-tossing task. Our approach extends motion manifold primitives to variable-length trajectories through a compact parametrization and learns a high-quality manifold from a large-scale dataset of planned motions. Building on this manifold, a conditional flow matching model is trained in the latent space with a small set of real-world trials, enabling the generation of throwing trajectories that account for execution dynamics. Experiments show that our method can generate coordinated and smooth motion trajectories for the ring-tossing task. In real-world evaluations, it achieves high success rates and even surpasses the performance of trained human experts. Moreover, it generalizes to novel targets beyond the training range, indicating that it successfully learns the underlying trajectory-dynamics mapping.


Dynamic Manipulation of Deformable Objects in 3D: Simulation, Benchmark and Learning Strategy

Goal-conditioned dynamic manipulation is inherently challenging due to complex system dynamics and stringent task constraints, particularly in deformable object scenarios characterized by high degrees of freedom and underactuation. Prior methods often simplify the problem to low-speed or 2D settings, limiting their applicability to real-world 3D tasks. In this work, we explore 3D goal-conditioned rope manipulation as a representative challenge. To mitigate data scarcity, we introduce a novel simulation framework and benchmark grounded in reduced-order dynamics, which enables compact state representation and facilitates efficient policy learning. Building on this, we propose Dynamics Informed Diffusion Policy (DIDP), a framework that integrates imitation pretraining with physics-informed test-time adaptation. First, we design a diffusion policy that learns inverse dynamics within the reduced-order space, enabling imitation learning to move beyond naรฏve data fitting and capture the underlying physical structure. Second, we propose a physics-informed test-time adaptation scheme that imposes kinematic boundary conditions and structured dynamics priors on the diffusion process, ensuring consistency and reliability in manipulation execution. Extensive experiments validate the proposed approach, demonstrating strong performance in terms of accuracy and robustness in the learned policy.


Design of a low-cost and lightweight 6 DoF bimanual arm for dynamic and contact-rich manipulation

--Dynamic and contact-rich object manipulation, such as striking, snatching, or hammering, remains challenging for robotic systems due to hardware limitations. Most existing robots are constrained by high-inertia design, limited compliance, and reliance on expensive torque sensors. T o address this, we introduce ARMADA (Affordable Robot for Manipulation and Dynamic Actions), a 6 degrees-of-freedom bimanual robot designed for dynamic manipulation research. ARMADA combines low-inertia, back-drivable actuators with a lightweight design, using readily available components and 3D-printed links for ease of assembly in research labs. The entire system, including both arms, is built for just $6,100. Each arm achieves speeds up to 6.16m/s, almost twice that of most collaborative robots, with a comparable payload of 2.5kg. We demonstrate ARMADA can perform dynamic manipulation like snatching, hammering, and bimanual throwing in real-world environments. We also showcase its effectiveness in reinforcement learning (RL) by training a non-prehensile manipulation policy in simulation and transferring it zero-shot to the real world, as well as human motion shadowing for dynamic bimanual object throwing. ARMADA is fully open-sourced with detailed assembly instructions, CAD models, URDFs, simulation, and learning codes. While kinematic pick-and-place is sufficient for static, controlled tasks, dynamic manipulation is necessary for building an effective general-purpose robot.


Soft Robotic Dynamic In-Hand Pen Spinning

Dynamic in-hand manipulation remains a challenging task for soft robotic systems that have demonstrated advantages in safe compliant interactions but struggle with high-speed dynamic tasks. In this work, we present SWIFT, a system for learning dynamic tasks using a soft and compliant robotic hand. Unlike previous works that rely on simulation, quasi-static actions and precise object models, the proposed system learns to spin a pen through trial-and-error using only real-world data without requiring explicit prior knowledge of the pen's physical attributes. With self-labeled trials sampled from the real world, the system discovers the set of pen grasping and spinning primitive parameters that enables a soft hand to spin a pen robustly and reliably. After 130 sampled actions per object, SWIFT achieves 100% success rate across three pens with different weights and weight distributions, demonstrating the system's generalizability and robustness to changes in object properties. The results highlight the potential for soft robotic end-effectors to perform dynamic tasks including rapid in-hand manipulation. We also demonstrate that SWIFT generalizes to spinning items with different shapes and weights such as a brush and a screwdriver which we spin with 10/10 and 5/10 success rates respectively. Dynamic Cloth Manipulation Considering Variable Stiffness and Material Change Using Deep Predictive Model with Parametric Bias

Dynamic manipulation of flexible objects such as fabric, which is difficult to modelize, is one of the major challenges in robotics. With the development of deep learning, we are beginning to see results in simulations and in some actual robots, but there are still many problems that have not yet been tackled. Humans can move their arms at high speed using their flexible bodies skillfully, and even when the material to be manipulated changes, they can manipulate the material after moving it several times and understanding its characteristics. Therefore, in this research, we focus on the following two points: (1) body control using a variable stiffness mechanism for more dynamic manipulation, and (2) response to changes in the material of the manipulated object using parametric bias. By incorporating these two approaches into a deep predictive model, we show through simulation and actual robot experiments that Musashi-W, a musculoskeletal humanoid with variable stiffness mechanism, can dynamically manipulate cloth while detecting changes in the physical properties of the manipulated object.


Self-Supervised Learning of Dynamic Planar Manipulation of Free-End Cables

Abstract-- Dynamic manipulation of free-end cables has applications for cable management in homes, warehouses and manufacturing plants. We present a supervised learning approach for dynamic manipulation of free-end cables, focusing on the problem of getting the cable endpoint to a designated target position, which may lie outside the reachable workspace of the robot end effector. We present a simulator, tune it to closely match experiments with physical cables, and then collect training data for learning dynamic cable manipulation. We evaluate with 3 cables and a physical UR5 robot. Results over 32 5 trials on 3 cables suggest that a physical UR5 robot can attain a median error distance ranging from 22% to 35% of the cable length among cables, outperforming an analytic baseline by 21% and a Gaussian Process baseline by 7% with lower interquartile range (IQR).


Dynamic Manipulation of Deformable Objects using Imitation Learning with Adaptation to Hardware Constraints

Imitation Learning (IL) is a promising paradigm for learning dynamic manipulation of deformable objects since it does not depend on difficult-to-create accurate simulations of such objects. However, the translation of motions demonstrated by a human to a robot is a challenge for IL, due to differences in the embodiments and the robot's physical limits. These limits are especially relevant in dynamic manipulation where high velocities and accelerations are typical. To address this problem, we propose a framework that first maps a dynamic demonstration into a motion that respects the robot's constraints using a constrained Dynamic Movement Primitive. Second, the resulting object state is further optimized by quasi-static refinement motions to optimize task performance metrics. This allows both efficiently altering the object state by dynamic motions and stable small-scale refinements. We evaluate the framework in the challenging task of bag opening, designing the system BILBO: Bimanual dynamic manipulation using Imitation Learning for Bag Opening. Our results show that BILBO can successfully open a wide range of crumpled bags, using a demonstration with a single bag. See supplementary material at https://sites.google.com/view/bilbo-bag.


Dynamic Manipulation of a Deformable Linear Object: Simulation and Learning

We show that it is possible to learn an open-loop policy in simulation for the dynamic manipulation of a deformable linear object (DLO) -- e.g., a rope, wire, or cable -- that can be executed by a real robot without additional training. Our method is enabled by integrating an existing state-of-the-art DLO model (Discrete Elastic Rods) with MuJoCo, a robot simulator. We describe how this integration was done, check that validation results produced in simulation match what we expect from analysis of the physics, and apply policy optimization to train an open-loop policy from data collected only in simulation that uses a robot arm to fling a wire precisely between two obstacles. This policy achieves a success rate of 76.7% when executed by a real robot in hardware experiments without additional training on the real task.


ShakingBot: Dynamic Manipulation for Bagging

Bag manipulation through robots is complex and challenging due to the deformability of the bag. Based on dynamic manipulation strategy, we propose a new framework, ShakingBot, for the bagging tasks. ShakingBot utilizes a perception module to identify the key region of the plastic bag from arbitrary initial configurations. According to the segmentation, ShakingBot iteratively executes a novel set of actions, including Bag Adjustment, Dual-arm Shaking, and One-arm Holding, to open the bag. The dynamic action, Dual-arm Shaking, can effectively open the bag without the need to account for the crumpled configuration.Then, we insert the items and lift the bag for transport. We perform our method on a dual-arm robot and achieve a success rate of 21/33 for inserting at least one item across various initial bag configurations. In this work, we demonstrate the performance of dynamic shaking actions compared to the quasi-static manipulation in the bagging task. We also show that our method generalizes to variations despite the bag's size, pattern, and color.
