I find these questions very interesting. During some recent study, I wrote a response to a different question'Will having robots around make people more or less lonely? I postulated that we will be lonelier when Robots offer an alternative to Human friendships. Suitable human companions will not be available, to those who seek them, because those potential companions all have chosen robotic friends. We have to factor in our human nature into all AI related questions.

Researchers have uncovered a 1,500-year-old stucco mask of Maya ruler K'inich Janaab'Pakal. What differentiates this mask from others is it's seemingly made in the king's likeness. An eagle-eyed archaeologist has used a freely available online map to locate 27 Maya ceremonial sites in Mexico. Takeshi Inomata, a professor of archaeology at the University of Arizona, made the discovery using a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) map he found online last year, according to the New York Times. LiDAR technology harnesses a laser to measure distances to the Earth's surface and can prove extremely valuable to study what is hidden in areas with thick vegetation.

Rare Disease Treatments to Be Discovered by Machine Learning and Simulation Platform

Earlier today, Alexion Pharmaceuticals was granted the licensing rights to operate GNS Healthcare's Reverse Engineering and Forward Simulation (REFS) casual machine learning and simulation platform. Alexion intends to use the platform to accelerate both the research of rare diseases and the development of novel therapies. Earlier this year, it was instrumental in finding a new target for breast cancer. In May, GNS published data in the American Association for Cancer Research's (AACR) journal Cancer Research in which they announced the discovery of novel targets, including TRIB1, which had positive implications for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer. In June, it was announced that the company would be teaming up with Genentech to improve the capability to clarify disease mechanisms, recognize new targets, and diagnose patient populations more accurately.
