There Aren't a Lot of Reasons to Get Excited About a New Amazon Smartphone The company is reportedly building a new AI-powered mobile device. If Amazon follows through on the plan, experts warn it would be next to impossible to break into a crowded market. Reuters reports that Amazon's Devices and Services unit is working on a smartphone--dubbed Transformer--with Amazon's Alexa+ AI assistant and shopping as a major focus of the experience. It's unclear what this smartphone would cost, how much Amazon is spending to develop Transformer, and what operating system it will run. There's no word on when it will launch, and there's still also a chance the project could be scrapped altogether.

Everyone wants to kill the app. There's a wave of companies building so-called app-less phones and gadgets, leveraging artificial intelligence advancements to create smarter virtual assistants that can handle all kinds of tasks through one portal, bypassing the need for specific apps for a particular function. We might be witnessing the early stages of the first major smartphone evolution since the introduction of the iPhone--or an AI-hype-fueled gimmick. There's the Humane Ai Pin, a wearable that can identify objects, take photos, and project information into the palm of your hand. It's powered by a digital assistant that uses multiple large language models, such as ChatGPT, and it's designed to reduce reliance on the smartphone.


'Constantly monitored': the pushback against AI surveillance at work

From algorithms firing staff without human intervention to software keeping tabs on bathroom breaks, technologies including artificial intelligence are already upsetting workers and unsettling workplaces. At call centers, AI systems record and grade how workers handle calls, often giving failing grades for not sticking to the script. Some corporate software spies on workers to see whether they ever write the word "union" in their emails. As technologies grow ever more sophisticated in monitoring, surveilling and speeding up workers, many workplace experts say US businesses, labor unions and government are not doing nearly enough to protect workers from tech's downsides. "Workers are being constantly monitored, and AI-based monitoring tools can make mistakes that can translate into unfair pay cuts or firings," said Virginia Doellgast, a professor of employment relations at Cornell.

Germany: T-Systems partners with Envision Digital to reduce carbon emissions - Actu IA

On August 4, Deutsche Telekom, a global leader in integrated telecommunications, announced that its subsidiary T-Systems will partner with China's Envision Digital, a leading global provider of AIoT software for Net Zero solutions, to enable German retailers to reduce their CO2 emissions. Under the partnership, Deutsche Telekom's enterprise customers will offer Envision Digital's Net Zero EnOSTM platform on T-Systems' sovereign cloud. Operating in more than 20 countries with approximately 28,400 employees, T-Systems is a leading global provider of information technology and digitalization solutions. Recently launched, the sovereign cloud it developed in partnership with Google Cloud is the first of its kind on the German market. It complies with the requirements of German regulators, while retaining the public cloud functionality of a hyperscaler, which helps accelerate digitalization projects.


Beethoven's 10th Symphony Completed By AI: Premiere October 2021

The world premiere of Beethoven's 10th Symphony, which has been completed with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), will take place on 9 October 2021 at the Telekom Forum in Bonn. The performance was originally scheduled for November 2020, to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most influential and significant composers of all time, composed nine symphonies and began working on his 10th Symphony shortly before he died. Deutsche Telekom organized a team of international musicologists and artificial intelligence experts led by Dr. Matthias Röder, to create a possible completed version of Beethoven's unfinished 10th Symphony with the help of AI, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. The experts providing scientific guidance and supervision included Prof. Dr. Christine Siegert, head of the Beethoven-Haus research department. The AI was "fed" with Beethoven's compositions and the sketches for his 10th Symphony as well as works from composers and musicians that influenced Beethoven including Johann Sebastian Bach.


5G: Using drones to beam signals from the stratosphere

Plans to beam 5G signals to the public via drones that stay airborne for nine days at a time have been announced by two UK firms. They want to use antenna-equipped aircraft powered by hydrogen to deliver high-speed connectivity to wide areas. Stratospheric Platforms and Cambridge Consultants say they could cover the whole of the UK with about 60 drones. But telecoms analysts question whether the economic case for this scheme is quite as simple as it sounds. The Cambridge-based companies say they would run the service in partnership with existing mobile operators. They are already backed by Deutsche Telekom, which hopes to trial the technology in rural southern Germany in 2024.


MWC Barcelona 2019: On the Road to Self-Driving Cars, 5G Will Make Us Better Drivers

I'm not sure I can describe the apprehension you feel when you sit down to drive a semi-truck for the first time in your life--and that semi-truck is roughly 2,500 kilometers away. In a demonstration at MWC Barcelona 2019 (formerly called Mobile World Congress), I overcame my anxiety and successfully drove a truck through a modest obstacle course in a parking lot in Götenberg, Sweden, while I sat surrounded by monitors in a conference hall in southern Spain. Thankfully, Einride, the company behind the truck I was driving, took precautions to make sure I didn't set a new world record for "Instigating a Traffic Accident from the Greatest Distance Away." Those precautions included limiting the top speed of the truck, called a T-pod, to five kilometers per hour regardless of how hard I stepped on the gas, and having an Einride employee on site in Götenberg with a kill switch at the ready. With a 4G network, driving a truck from half a continent away would be tricky, to say the least.
