MIT forum examines the rise of automation in the workplace

#artificialintelligence

"Pop culture does a great job of scaring us that AI will take over the world," said Professor Daniela Rus, speaking at a virtual MIT event on Wednesday. But realistically, said Rus, who directs the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), robots aren't going to steal everyone's jobs overnight -- they're not yet good enough at tasks requiring high dexterity or generalized processing of different kinds of information. Still, automation has crept into some workplaces in recent years, a trend that's likely to continue. Throughout the daylong conference, the "AI and the Work of the Future Congress," which convened speakers from academia, industry, and government, one key theme consistently emerged: Task automation shouldn't be viewed as a replacement for human work, but a partner for it. With the exception of some middle-skilled manufacturing jobs, automation has generally improved human productivity, not eliminated the need for it.

Brave new car: Bosch eyes Google, spends €4 billion on self-driving vehicles

#artificialintelligence

Stuttgart-based Bosch, the world's largest car-component maker, is putting the pedal to the metal, announcing a five-year investment program worth €4 billion ($4.6 billion) to boost the development of self-driving cars and quadruple the number of artificial intelligence experts to 4,000 by 2021. "Driverless driving will be a game changer for individual mobility. It will open the door to disruptive business models such as robotaxis and shuttle-based mobility," Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner said in a statement. "We want to belong to, and can be, among the top," he said, hinting at US and Chinese rivals. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google owner Alphabet, is considered a leader in self-driving car technology and has already tested driverless vehicles on hundreds of thousands of miles. Tesla, with its Autopilot feature, taxi service Uber and the Chinese rival Didi are also far advanced in testing autonomous vehicles.

Artificial Intelligence have the potential to create high value jobs: Bosch Group CEO

#artificialintelligence

Volkmar Denner, CEO of the Germany-headquartered Bosch Group which supplies technology and services, said that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to be like any other industrial revolution and will lead to a shift in job qualification profiles. Denner said that AI will have the potential to create high value jobs and added that the Bosch Group was bullish about its Indian operations. "Last year we had set up an AI centre in Bengaluru, and our newly established Connected Mobility Solutions division is active in India too, where it is helping to shape the mobility of the future. We plan to invest an additional Rs 1700 crores in India in the next three years," said Denner. He further remarked that the company has always believed in giving adequate training to its people to develop new skill sets.

AI and the expansion of the IoT - PACE

A world where there are no car accidents, congestion is a thing of the past, and artificial intelligence (AI)and Internet of Things drive the future are no longer wishful thinking. It's a reality that German-based companies like Bosch is pushing and could be happening in as little as five years. At Bosch's annual press conference held earlier this year, Dr Volker Denner, chairman of the board of management for Bosch, outlined the company's future strategic plans for automated cars and the impact AI and the IoT will have on many things in the not-too-distant future. How serious is the company in pressing innovation in this space? This year the company added 500 more engineers to work on its automated driving projects, which means it has more than 3000 specialists working in this arena.

Bosch and Nvidia create an AI supercomputer for self-driving tech

#artificialintelligence

Bosch is creating the brain for the self-driving cars of the future. At the international Bosch ConnectedWorld 2017 conference in Berlin this week, the supplier of technology and services presented an onboard computer for automated vehicles. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the computer can apply machine learning methods. The AI onboard computer is expected to guide self-driving cars through even complex traffic situations, or ones that are new to the car. "We are teaching the car how to maneuver through road traffic by itself," said Dr. Volkmar Denner, chairman of the Bosch board of management.

Bosch plans to anchor AI, Blockchain in the car

Bosch's car control computer will make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enable autonomous driving even in complex traffic situations such as urban environments with heterogeneous traffic participants. "We are teaching the car how to maneuver through road traffic by itself," said Volkmar Denner, chairman of the Bosch board of management, at the event currently taking place in Berlin. Using AI, the car will be able to correctly interpret traffic situations and predict the behavior of other traffic participants at high accuracy. For building the core onboard computer, Bosch plans to collaborate with U.S. technology company Nvidia. The company will supply Bosch with a chip that stores algorithms, generated with machine learning methods.

Amongst all the activity in autonomously driven vehicle joint ventures, new R&D facilities, strategic acquisitions (such as Mobileye being acquired by Intel) and booming startup fundings, two big players in the industry, NVIDIA and Bosch, are partnering to develop an AI self-driving car supercomputer. Bosch CEO Dr Volkmar Denner announced the partnership during his keynote address at Bosch Connected World, in Berlin. "Automated driving makes roads safer, and artificial intelligence is the key to making that happen," said Denner. "We are making the car smart. We are teaching the car how to maneuver through road traffic by itself."

Cyber Valley: Bosch establishes an endowed chair for machine learning

#artificialintelligence

Stuttgart, Germany – Germany is getting its first Cyber Valley: to drive forward research in Baden-Württemberg on artificial intelligence, Bosch and partners from politics, business, and science are pooling their strengths in a new initiative. Modeled after Silicon Valley, Cyber Valley's aim is to translate findings from basic research into concrete industrial applications. "Machine learning and artificial intelligence are key competencies in shaping the connected world," said Bosch CEO Dr. Volkmar Denner at the Cyber Valley kickoff in Stuttgart. "In the international competition for innovation, Germany should not sit back and allow major IT companies from abroad to dominate these areas." Bosch is supporting the Cyber Valley venture to the tune of some seven million euros.
