Founded in 1974, Deakin is a public university in Victoria with 61,000 students across five campuses: Melbourne Burwood, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront, Warrnambool, and the online Cloud Campus. We are a progressive and open-minded university, with the highest student satisfaction in Victoria and consistently ranked in the top 1% of the world's universities. The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will initiate and conduct research in the areas of harmful digital marketing to children and youth and global health. Specifically, the Research Fellow will coordinate the #DigitalYouth study, which will involve recruiting and collecting video digital use data from 300 children and youth and work collaboratively with the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation to apply Artificial Intelligence techniques to identify harmful marketing (unhealthy food, alcohol, gambling, e-cigarettes) in this data. The work will build on a proof-of-concept system already developed by the research team.
Deakin University Welcomes New Avalon Facility
Deakin University says it welcomes the announcement from Hanwha Defense Australia, and the Australian Government, that its new armoured vehicle centre of excellence will be constructed at Avalon Airport. Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin said the Geelong-based centre would cement the University's close connection with Hanwha, facilitating investment in local research expertise and the development of high-tech jobs. It's expected the new bespoke production facility will create a minimum of 300 jobs, spread across construction, acquisition and maintenance, as well as generating ongoing support opportunities for Australian industry until the late 2040s. Deakin and Hanwha Defense Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year, an agreement to drive collaboration in modelling and simulation, machine learning applications and human performance. "Deakin and Hanwha share a common goal in the development of emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing, with a focus on growing the local economy through education and employment opportunities," Professor Martin said.
5G: Using drones to beam signals from the stratosphere
Plans to beam 5G signals to the public via drones that stay airborne for nine days at a time have been announced by two UK firms. They want to use antenna-equipped aircraft powered by hydrogen to deliver high-speed connectivity to wide areas. Stratospheric Platforms and Cambridge Consultants say they could cover the whole of the UK with about 60 drones. But telecoms analysts question whether the economic case for this scheme is quite as simple as it sounds. The Cambridge-based companies say they would run the service in partnership with existing mobile operators. They are already backed by Deutsche Telekom, which hopes to trial the technology in rural southern Germany in 2024.
