Walmart Goes Big With Drone Delivery Expansion

WIRED

For nearly two years, Alphabet's drone company, Wing, has managed deliveries for a handful of Walmart locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Customers in the metro region can click "checkout" on a small order on Walmart's website or app and, within an average delivery window of 19 minutes, see a drone buzz above their lawn or backyard and lower a delivery box on a tether. Now both companies say the service is ready for serious expansion. They announced Thursday that Wing's drone delivery service will roll out to 100 additional US stores in the next year, including Walmart locations in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa. The companies say the expansion will give "millions" of homes access to drone delivery within 30 minutes or less, making the drone delivery network the largest in the country.

In Memoriam: E. Allen Emerson

Communications of the ACM

E. Allen Emerson was the first graduate student of Edmund M. Clarke at Harvard University. After discussing several ideas for Allen's dissertation, they identified a promising candidate: verifying a finite-state system against a formal specification. According to Martha Clarke, Edmund's widow, it was during a walk across Harvard Yard that they decided to call it "model checking." Emerson received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics for this work in 1981. Twenty-five years later, he and Clarke (along with Joseph Sifakis) shared the ACM A.M. Turing Award in 2007 for this and related work.

Wing and Walmart will offer six-mile drone deliveries over Dallas

Engadget

Wing, Alphabet's aviation subsidiary, is partnering with Walmart to kick off drone deliveries from the retail chain in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metro area. The flights will begin taking off "in the coming weeks" from a Walmart Supercenter in Frisco, TX, and the companies plan to expand to a second DFW location before the end of the year. The companies say the coverage area from both stores will cover 60,000 homes. The service will be available to homes within about six miles of the supported stores. Residents in those areas can order things like quick meals, groceries, essentials and over-the-counter medicines. The drones can fly up to 65 mph, and Wing says you'll get your items in under 30 minutes.

AI can spot early signs of Alzheimer's in speech patterns, study shows: Newsroom - UT Southwestern, Dallas, Texas

DALLAS – April 12, 2023 – New technologies that can capture subtle changes in a patient's voice may help physicians diagnose cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease before symptoms begin to show, according to a UT Southwestern Medical Center researcher who led a study published in the Alzheimer's Association publication Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring. "Our focus was on identifying subtle language and audio changes that are present in the very early stages of Alzheimer's disease but not easily recognizable by family members or an individual's primary care physician," said Ihab Hajjar, M.D., Professor of Neurology at UT Southwestern's Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute. Researchers used advanced machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) tools to assess speech patterns in 206 people – 114 who met the criteria for mild cognitive decline and 92 who were unimpaired. The team then mapped those findings to commonly used biomarkers to determine their efficacy in measuring impairment. Study participants, who were enrolled in a research program at Emory University in Atlanta, were given several standard cognitive assessments before being asked to record a spontaneous 1- to 2-minute description of artwork.
