If you're a Costco member, you're no stranger to a nice discount, it's one of the things that makes that $65 per year worth the cost. Even so, Costco tends to go all out for Black Friday, luring members into the warehouse with the sweet smell of discounts on game consoles, kitchen gadgets, and computers, not to mention $1.50 hot dogs. I've scoured the ads and circled some of the WIRED gear team's favorite stuff for you, leading you straight to savings that would make even the biggest Kirkland doubter jealous. As Amazon's executives took the stage one after another yesterday to introduce the world to the company's "next big leaps forward," a sense of deja vu crept up on me. It only grew stronger as the event progressed, with many new Amazon products seeming incredibly familiar. The company has been criticized in the past for borrowing designs of popular goods and selling them for a lot cheaper. That's not an uncommon practice of course -- massive retailers all over America like Walmart and Costco have offered lower-cost store-brand lines forever. But none of them stage flashy keynotes to tout their products as "innovations."

We aim to provably complete a sparse and highly-missing tensor in the presence of covariate information along tensor modes. Our motivation comes from online advertising where users click-through-rates (CTR) on ads over various devices form a CTR tensor that has about 96% missing entries and has many zeros on non-missing entries, which makes the standalone tensor completion method unsatisfactory. Beside the CTR tensor, additional ad features or user characteristics are often available. In this paper, we propose Covariate-assisted Sparse Tensor Completion (COSTCO) to incorporate covariate information for the recovery of the sparse tensor. The key idea is to jointly extract latent components from both the tensor and the covariate matrix to learn a synthetic representation. Theoretically, we derive the error bound for the recovered tensor components and explicitly quantify the improvements on both the reveal probability condition and the tensor recovery accuracy due to covariates. Finally, we apply COSTCO to an advertisement dataset consisting of a CTR tensor and ad covariate matrix, leading to 23% accuracy improvement over the baseline. An important by-product is that ad latent components from COSTCO reveal interesting ad clusters, which are useful for better ad targeting.

When Microsoft's 10-inch Surface Go tablet ships August 2, there will be another configuration to consider along with Microsoft's two: Costco's bundle, which looks like the better entry-level deal for this device. The Costco bundle offers 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, and the Type Cover for $550. Add $99 for the black Type Cover (or $129 for another color), and the prices for both increase to $498 and $648, respectively. The Costco bundle offers better bang for buck. The early round of Black Friday tech deals from Amazon and Dell point to some big discounts on TVs and game consoles. With just over three weeks to go until the big shopping week, we now have an idea of what to expect when it comes to a variety of other tech products. Similar to Dell, Costco and Staples will be offering deep discounts on computers. Microsoft's popular Surface Pro 4 tablet for instance, will be priced at $799.99 at Staples, a $200 discount, although the $129.99 keyboard accessory is not included. Costco will have a bundle that includes the tablet as well as the keyboard add-on for $250 off its regular price, or roughly $749.99 assuming the discount is applied to the similar bundle Costco currently offers.
