Reviews: The Cells Out of Sample (COOS) dataset and benchmarks for measuring out-of-sample generalization of image classifiers

Neural Information Processing Systems

The dataset contains tens of thousands of 64x64 pixel images of cells. Each image shows cells labelled with a fluorescent protein. In total, seven different fluorescent proteins were employed. The authors consider the image analysis task of classifying images w.r.t.

The Cells Out of Sample (COOS) dataset and benchmarks for measuring out-of-sample generalization of image classifiers

Neural Information Processing Systems

Understanding if classifiers generalize to out-of-sample datasets is a central problem in machine learning. Microscopy images provide a standardized way to measure the generalization capacity of image classifiers, as we can image the same classes of objects under increasingly divergent, but controlled factors of variation. We created a public dataset of 132,209 images of mouse cells, COOS-7 (Cells Out Of Sample 7-Class). COOS-7 provides a classification setting where four test datasets have increasing degrees of covariate shift: some images are random subsets of the training data, while others are from experiments reproduced months later and imaged by different instruments. We benchmarked a range of classification models using different representations, including transferred neural network features, end-to-end classification with a supervised deep CNN, and features from a self-supervised CNN.

After Meta's COO, Another Top Executive To Depart Soon

#artificialintelligence

San FranCisco, June 3: Following the announcement that Sheryl Sandberg will step down as Meta's COO later this year, the company is losing another Executive as part of a reorganisation of its artificial intelligence (AI) group. The company said that Jerome Pesenti, Meta's VP of AI, will depart in mid-June after helping it through the early stages of the AI transition. "We are grateful for the incredible work Jerome has done over the past over four years in building, leading, and scaling a world-class AI function for Meta," the company said in a blogpost. "In the new model we will distribute the ownership of these AI systems back to Meta's product groups," it added. To continue advancing both the AI technology and community, Meta said it will also convene a new cross-functional AI leadership team led by Joelle.

Using Intelligent Technology in Sourcing to Get Ahead of Rising U.S. Tariffs

#artificialintelligence

Since the first list went into effect on July 6, 2018, tariffs on goods imported to the U.S. from China have been a significant source of pain, particularly for those in the high-tech industry. As reported by SourceToday, the 818 categories of products listed are valued at $34 billion, with electronic components making up 58 of the categories, accounting for 15 percent of the value of targeted goods. A second list may soon be on the way and promises to hit electronic components even harder, with 27 percent of the value of goods, totaling $4.3 billion of the $16 billion, in this second wave of tariffs. Bracing for the impact of existing and future tariffs, some distributors are trying to clear the way by rolling tariffs into their prices, while others are depending on manufacturers to account for the cost after the buy. These policies continue to be in flux as the industry comes to terms with the issue, making it almost impossible to determine total expenditures.

Uber appoints former Orbitz CEO Barney Harford as chief operating officer

@machinelearnbot

The long search is over for Uber's chief operating officer. Former Orbitz CEO Barney Harford has formally accepted the position today. Looking fwd to working w @dkhos again to help @Uber achieve its full potential https://t.co/gdnXJfFrjS In early March, former CEO Travis Kalanick disclosed he would be searching for someone to fill the position amidst allegations he had fostered a culture of sexism and achievement at any cost. The company continued to suffer a number of setbacks in the months following, including Kalanick's resignation, a lawsuit from Alphabet's self-driving car company Waymo and a Department of Justice investigation.

Baidu names former Microsoft Office head Qi Lu as its COO

PCWorld

Chinese search giant Baidu has named former Microsoft business group head Qi Lu as its COO and group president. Until last September Lu was head of Microsoft's Applications and Services Group, where he managed products including Microsoft Office and Office 365, Bing search engine and Cortana personal assistant. At Baidu, Lu will be in charge of products, technology, sales, marketing and operations. A key strategic focus for the company over the next ten years will be artificial intelligence, Baidu chairman and CEO Robin Li said on Monday. Li is counting on Lu's leadership experience and knowledge of AI to help the company attract the necessary expertise to become a global leader in the field, he said.

Baidu names former Microsoft exec as COO in artificial intelligence push

China's Baidu said it has appointed a former Microsoft executive as chief operating officer, part of a push into artificial intelligence as earnings from its core search engine business wane. Baidu has been refocusing its business strategy after the introduction of new advertising regulations, aimed at medical advertising in particular, led to a 16 percent drop in ad customers during quarter ended in September. Qi Lu, who was an executive vice president at Microsoft and headed its unit in charge of Office, Bing and Skype until last September, will help develop artificial intelligence as a key strategic focus for Baidu over the next decade. Lu possesses a wealth of leadership and management experience, and is a leading authority in the area of artificial intelligence," Baidu Chief Executive Robin Li in a statement. The company launched a $200 million fund in October to focus on artificial intelligence, augmented reality and deep learning, followed by a $3 billion fund announced in September to target mid and late stage start-ups.

Former Microsoft executive and noted AI expert Qi Lu joins Baidu as COO

@machinelearnbot

Just a day after it opened an augmented reality lab, China's internet giant Baidu has beefed up on its AI talent after it announced the hiring of former Microsoft executive Qi Lu as group president and COO. Baidu is best known for its search engine, which dominates in China, but over the past two years it has put focus on developing artificial intelligence, which includes self-driving cars and more. In that respect, the hiring of Lu -- who exited Microsoft last year on medical grounds -- is a major coup. Lu most recently ran Microsoft's applications and services business, and previously headed up the Redmond-based company's search division having joined in 2009 following an 11-year stint with Yahoo. Fun fact: While with Microsoft, he championed a bid for Slack, but ultimately CEO Satya Nadella and co-founder Bill Gates decided against it.
