A "gravity hole" beneath Antarctica sounds like the plot to a bad sci-fi movie, but it's a very real situation deep beneath the Earth's surface stretching back tens of millions of years. The phenomenon thankfully isn't as apocalyptic as it sounds, either. In fact, researchers say these complex interactions between rock densities, gravitational pull, and sea levels are actually helping them understand how the southernmost continent's ice sheets evolved, and what their influences mean for the planet's climate.

While the sociotechnical imaginaries about these syst ems promote AI as critical to achiev ing Africa's sustainable development agenda, some of them have subtly permeated society, recreating new values, cultures, practices, and histories that threaten to marginalize minority groups in the region. Africa predominantly frames AI as an imaginary solution to address complex social challenges; however, the narrative subtly ignores deeper power - related concerns, including data governance, embedded algorithmic colonialism, and the exploitation that propag ates new digital colonial sites. However, the development of current AI ethics in Africa is in its infancy and predominantly framed through lenses of Western perspective, with the social and ethical impacts of the AI innovations and application on African epistemologies and worldviews not prioritized. To ensure that people on the African continent leverage the benefits of AI, these social and ethical impacts o f AI need to be critically and explicitly considered and addressed. This chapter will therefore seek to frame the elemental and invisible problems of AI and big data in the African context by examining digital sites and infrastructure through the lens of power and interests. It will present reflections on how these sites are using AI recommendation algorithms to recreate new digital societies in the region, how they have the potential to propagate algorithmic colonialism and negative gender norms, and what this means for the regional sustainable development agenda. The chapter proposes adopting business models that embrace response - ability and consider the existence of alternative socio - material worlds of AI. These reflections will mainly come from ongoing discussions with Kenyan social media users in this author's user space talks, which take place every month. Constraints-of-Thought: A Framework for Constrained Reasoning in Language-Model-Guided Search

While researchers have made significant progress in enabling large language models (LLMs) to perform multi-step planning, LLMs struggle to ensure that those plans align with high-level user intent and satisfy symbolic constraints, especially in complex, multi-step domains. Existing reasoning approaches such as Chain-of-Thought (CoT), Tree-of-Thought (ToT), and verifier-augmented methods, expand the search space but often yield infeasible actions or hallucinated steps. To overcome these limitations, we propose Constraints-of-Thought (Const-o-T), a framework that provides a structured prior that enables Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) focus search on semantically meaningful paths. Each reasoning step is represented as an (intent, constraint) pair, which serves both to compress the search space and enforce validity. Unlike prior methods that merely generate reasoning traces or validate outputs post hoc, Const-o-T uses (intent, constraint)pairs to actively focus the search toward feasible and meaningful plans. We integrate Const-o-T into MCTS using a structured representation of intent-constraint pairs constraints prune infeasible branches and guide exploration toward semantically valid actions, improving planning efficiency and verifiable decision-making. We demonstrate across three domains Risk game, CAD code generation, and arithmetic reasoning that our approach outperforms baselines, yielding higher accuracy and stronger structural alignment. Our contribution is to demonstrate that Const-of-T offers a generalizable foundation for constraint-guided reasoning, enabling more efficient, constraint-aligned, and domain-adaptable planning with LLMs.

The EU's Global Gateway plan is challenging China's Belt and Road Initiative to influence Africa, by providing funding that will expand access to electricity. Nearly 600 million Africans--half the continent's population--are without electricity, largely because of the continent's limited distribution network, and Africans make up the vast majority of those worldwide without electricity access. But the European Union wants to change this. At the end of September, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced a €545 million ($636 million) investment package to support renewable energy and electrification in Africa. New EU-funded projects will include a high-voltage transmission line in Côte d'Ivoire, the electrification of hundreds of rural communities in Cameroon, the exploitation of wind and hydro energy in Lesotho, and the installation of mini-grids in remote areas of Madagascar.

Language Models (LMs) are primarily evaluated on globally popular sports, often overlooking regional and indigenous sporting traditions. To address this gap, we introduce \textbf{\textit{CultSportQA}}, a benchmark designed to assess LMs' understanding of traditional sports across 60 countries and 6 continents, encompassing four distinct cultural categories. The dataset features 33,000 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) across text and image modalities, each of which is categorized into three key types: history-based, rule-based, and scenario-based. To evaluate model performance, we employ zero-shot, few-shot, and chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting across a diverse set of Large Language Models (LLMs), Small Language Models (SLMs), and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLMs). By providing a comprehensive multilingual and multicultural sports benchmark, \textbf{\textit{CultSportQA}} establishes a new standard for assessing AI's ability to understand and reason about traditional sports.


Charges dropped against teen pilot detained in Antarctica

Charges against an American influencer and teen pilot who has been stranded on a remote island in the Antarctic since June have been dropped. Ethan Guo, 19, is alleged to have illegally landed his plane in Chilean territory after embarking on a solo trip to all seven continents to raise money for cancer research, according to local authorities. They accused him of providing false flight plan information to officials who detained him and opened an investigation. A judge has ordered him to leave the area, pay a $30,000 (£22,332) donation to a children's cancer foundation and is banned from re-entering Chilean territory for three years. Mr Guo made headlines last year when he began an attempt to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents and collect donations for research into childhood cancer.


Bones of a raccoon-sized prehistoric lizard sat in a jar for 20 years

For 20 years, the remains of a giant lizard that lived alongside dinosaurs were tucked away in a jar at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Simply labeled "lizard," the fragmented and several millennia-old bones actually belonged to an entirely new species of giant lizard dug up from the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah in 2005. Bolg amondol was a raccoon-sized armored mostesaurian lizard that lived about 77 million years ago, similar to today's Gila monsters (Heloderma horridum). It is named after the goblin prince from The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien and is described in a study published June 17 in the open-access journal Royal Society Open Science.

Mozambique's former First Lady Graça Machel welcomed his announcement, saying it came in a "moment of crisis". "We are counting on Mr Gates' steadfast commitment to continue walking this path of transformation alongside us," she said. The US government has cut aid to Africa, including programmes to treat patients with HIV/Aids, as part of US President Donald Trump's "America First" policy, raising concerns about the future of healthcare on the continent.
