Thoughts about Some Surprising AI-Era Technology Readiness Findings

Communications of the ACM

With the assistance of Arthur D. Little and the Cutter Consortium, we surveyed business executives about their business-technology plans, readiness and priorities.a The results surprised us--a lot. We learned that nearly 80% of the companies still believe in some form of the central control of technology, and that only 5% of the companies are decentralized, where the lines of business are free to pursue technology initiatives on their own. Just over half of companies do not track emerging technologies or maintain technology watch lists. Only 17% of companies have a well-funded, well-defined innovation strategy, and 34% have no innovation strategy at all.

First of its kind study finds ChatGPT makes us 40% MORE productive and boosts output quality by 18%

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The machines may one day rule over humanity -- but in the near term AI-based chatbots like ChatGPT could help struggling workers hold their own in writing tasks. Those are the findings of a new study, at least, which tracked the writing performance of 453 'experienced, college-educated professionals' divided equally into two groups: one taught to use ChatGPT and another forced to complete their writing assignments on their own. The researchers found that the chatbot made their test subjects 40-percent more productive and improved the quality of their work by 18 percent. In fact, a significant number of the study participants, who had been encouraged to use ChatGPT, stuck with the software for an added boost in the real world. After two weeks, 34 percent reported using ChatGPT in a professional setting.

AI expert taps UN officials to learn how to build a global AI regulatory body

FOX News

Another challenge: Forming an AI regulatory body on a global scale would require significant funding. "We need money," he said. "We need some philanthropists probably to get us started." "It's still a very long road," Marcus told Fox News. "It's a big ask, but I think the time for it is right."

'Under Alien Skies' Will Fuel the Next Generation of Sci-Fi

WIRED

Phil Plait, creator of the popular astronomy blog Bad Astronomy, credits his interest in outer space partly to his childhood love of science fiction movies such as Angry Red Planet and Robinson Crusoe on Mars. "I'm a huge science fiction dork," Plait says in Episode 541 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast. "I've watched every TV show, just about, and movies and everything, read tons of books. In his new book, Under Alien Skies, Plait explores what various cosmic vistas would look like for a person who was physically present, studying them with ordinary human eyesight. "I open each chapter with a short vignette, basically a fictional tale," he says. So I say'You are at this planet,' 'You are standing on the bridge of your starship,' 'You are standing there watching a dust storm approach you on Mars.' Plait hopes that the book will serve as a valuable resource for filmmakers and science fiction authors looking to inject an extra dose of reality into their speculative visions. "I've actually done some consulting for movies and TV shows, and even a couple of video games," he says. "So I kind of know that process of advising writers, or other folks who are involved in the entertainment business, of what the real science is." As much as Plait enjoys seeing science fiction that incorporates real science, he recognizes that the ultimate aim of any book or movie is to tell a good story. "Even if they don't get the science correct, it's OK, because you're still inspiring people," he says. "And if they get the science right?

Deloitte Buys AI Group That Got CLM LinkSquares Going

#artificialintelligence

Deloitte has acquired SFL Scientific, a leading AI strategy and data science consulting firm. The move is especially interesting as SFL helped NLP-driven CLM company LinkSquares to get to grips with machine learning. In a fascinating blog post for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Michael Luk, chief technology officer at SFL Scientific, wrote: 'LinkSquares built its initial prototype using SQL running on AWS, but it wasn't using any machine learning technology. 'We learned about the team's vision to process terms and language automatically and understood the business pain points. We proposed building a custom machine learning solution to help the team scale and improve accuracy.'

AWS Touts Partners' Conversational AI Solutions

#artificialintelligence

Amazon Web Services is putting the focus on partners' conversational artificial intelligence (CAI) solutions that could spell the end of organizations' customers screaming "representative" to an interactive voice response phone system or getting stuck in a dead-end or circular digital chat loop. AWS is highlighting solutions from consulting partners including Cation Consulting, Deloitte Consulting, Quantiphi and TensorIoT and technology partners including NLX, ServisBOT and XAPP AI that allow organizations to deploy chatbots, virtual assistants and interactive voice response systems that incorporate AWS artificial intelligence and machine learning services. Their solutions employ services including Amazon Kendra, a machine learning-powered search tool that allows users to search unstructured text using natural language; Amazon Lex, a service for building conversational interfaces into applications using voice and text; and Amazon Polly, a text-to-speech service that converts text into lifelike speech. The new partner initiative comes as the demand for CAI interfaces continues to grow, according to Arte Merritt, who leads AWS partnerships for contact center intelligence and conversational AI. End-customers increasingly prefer to interact with businesses on digital channels, and businesses want to increase user satisfaction, reduce operational costs and streamline business processes, Merritt said in a blog post.
